February 1930: Soviet trained communist agent, Hi Chi Minh founded the Vietnamese Communist party. This event is important because it is the start of the Soviet Union attempting to take control of Vietnam.
2. March 1947: President Harry Truman states that it is the United States' foreign policy that says that it is their job to help any country that is threatened by communism. This event is also significant because it means that the United States is willing to help any country that is affected by communism.
3. January 1950: Both the USSR and the Republic of China see that there is a developing democratic government in Vietnam and both send supplies and communist military fighters to Vietnam.
4. July 1954: The Geneva Accords are established which states that the dividing line between the North and South Vietnam would be the 17th parallel. It also stated that there would be an election within two 2 years in hopes to unify Vietnam again under one single democratic government. But, the elections never happened.
5. July 1959: The first American soldiers are killed in their living quarters by Northern Communist Vietnamese soldiers. The United States wanted to stop communism and spread capitalism while the Soviet Union wanted to stop capitalism and wanted to spread communism. I think the Vietnam War especially effected the United States because they lost and couldn't save Vietnam from falling to communism. The USSR had effectively won the Vietnam War by spreading communism to Vietnam and then having the "domino effect" throughout Southeast Asia. Something that could be compared to the Vietnam War to the present day is Russia trying to take over Ukraine and reunite the Soviet Union. I think these can be compared because they are both instances of Russia taking over countries and swaying their governments to spread communism.
