It's encouraging them to read, discuss, and communicate the impressions they have from what they've read. Literacy is not just reading -- it's also being able to share what you read and how it applies to the world around you. It's writing skills and being an effective communicator.

Literacy is reading (and communicating) beyond the page and seeking understanding outside of the classroom; literacy is, as Paolo Freire puts it, "read[ing] the word and the world." Literacy is an opportunity to engage with language and mold it, dissect it, and fashion it into something new. Literacy is knowing the rules of language and being bold enough to challenge them.

Literacy is a multifaceted subject area. It enables the student to engage with the world around them through reading and developing observational skills through context clues. In music, we have a plethora of musical terms in different languages that communicate how a composer wants their piece to be performed. Using their musical literary skills, we delve into the meaning behind musical works and how to illicit emotional responses from the audience by following the composer's musical terms or "instructions." In addition, musical literacy engages students in simple and complex math processing (counting, subdividing, etc.). Without these skills, a student wouldn't be as successful in band.

The numbers are information to put in the numeric problem to solve the word problems. Word problems are just like dealing with everyday life situations with numbers. The text book words are related to problems worked in each section as examples, but there are new words and definitions introduced that need to be understood or at least thought about while incorporating the work with the problems given to solve. All this process is using ones reasoning skills and growing the thought process to understanding how to incorporate information into a workable numeric problem.

Being able to read and comprehend allows students to acquire more of an understanding of not only history but also current events. There is a connection between the past and the present. They need to be able to see past and present from different perspectives. Literacy is a way of doing this.

However in our classroom we use literacy by utilizing a voice recorded button to allow our students to engage and use the information in a functional life way. We train during academics how to utilize the literacy concepts by using the voice button during instruction and then transfer the information to students using the same concepts to let us know their desires (restroom, snack, activity) Literacy is important to all students and even low level students can utilize literacy in their classes to build their skills and learning capacity.

Rachel Gage BAHS Special Education
