Black. White. That’s all I remember.” I like how the author separated the colors the character saw to show emphasis.  
 
“My brain coiled around the knowledge: The boy in the hoodie has been shot.” The author used figurative language to show how hard it was for the character to process what he witnessed.  
  
“I scroll through the channels.” The author uses a vivid verb (scroll) to make the scene more vivid.  
  
“You can hear the women wailing all up and down the block. Mournful and high, cries like soaring birds.” The author uses a simile to compare the sound of the wailing to birds. The comparison makes the sound easier to “hear” or put together with what’s happening in the book.
