The First quote goes back to Week 3, and is saying the complete opposite. This shows how much Amal has grown as a person inside prison, whether he may know it or not.

Amal vs. Self, when he wants to say different things, but says something else because he needs to be more respectful. His situation in jail is a lot different than it is out. If you say one thing wrong, you could be dead. (pg.153)

Amal vs. Self, when Zenobia sends him a letter. "But the words still don't come so I write out her name over and over again" (pg. 175)

Amal vs. Character, he gets beaten up while waiting in line to shower. They take him out of line, and punch him in his stomach, so nobody can see that they beat him up, or see that he is hurt. (pg. 180)

Amal vs. Self, when Amal hides how he's feeling after getting beaten up. It shows his true personality, and he doesn't want to show he's hurt to worry his mother. (pg. 190)

Amal vs. Self, when Amal talks about his depressing thoughts he has while in prison (pg. 198)

Amal vs. Self, when he thinks back about school, and his grades and is trying so figure out weather he messed up or if school messed him up (pg. 208)

Family - We take what we have in life for granted, and we don't realize, until we don't have it anymore. (refer to first quote, pg. 152)

The Second quote, uses figurative language. The meaning of walking through means that in order to get through whatever the "bad' is in your life, you need to push yourself, and work hard. The author doesn't mean it in a literal sense.

Amal vs. Self, Amal is in Art class in prison, and the teacher brings up being a 'Prison Abolitionist', and Aml decides to act out in front of the whole class (pg. 218 - refer to first quote)

Dionne vs. self, she is struggling to keep everything together, her job, studying, and moving into a new city (pg. 246)

Mistakes and Misgivings - sometimes, we need to write things down to really process and accept something's (pg. 220)

"One small thing can change so much" - The Second quote creates one big idea, that "one small thing can change so much". Everything in life has a purpose, and even though to us it might seem small, it could help others so much. (pg. 225)

Amal vs Character : Amal got into a fight with a kid in 5th grade, and is telling us how it has impacted his life, and made the peers around him watch him closer and pay more attention to him, including his racial aspects

Perspective - Ibi expresses that the way we view things in life, have a huge impact on our life. When she talks about art, and how its a blank canvas, it really shows that you need to have a good perspective in order to create something that starts from something blank

The Tenth quote, shows us that Amal was raised in a way to always look on the bright side, and that you need to always have hope (pg.145)

Amal vs Self : Amal is on trial and the prosecutor is asking Amal's teacher if he has anger issues, which leads Amal to thinking about himself and wondering what is wrong with him (pg.10)

Amal vs Self : Amal is trying to control his anger when a college kid is videotaping the community talk about how they took so long to build it, and make it nice. The college kid laughs about it, which makes Amal upset and want to get into a fight with him. However Amal thinks about how peoples view would change and how it would make him look bad, so he holds off (pg.15)

The Fourth quote, uses figurative language to show us the racial differences in the courtroom between Umi and the other student. Which compares the two and describes how they are "opposites" of each other. (pg.20)

Race - The fourth quote gets one of the main ideas and conflicts into place when Ibi says "I am black he is white" which shows us the main idea of race in the book (pg.20)
