     The lack of rain in Ethan Frome symbolizes silence which is a common theme that is shown throughout the book. Ethan finds silence within every aspect in his life aside from when he is with Mattie. Zeena leaves him childless, fueling the silence throughout the book and the lack of life and fertility.

- Noah and the flood 
"Confused motions of rebellion stormed in him," (pg. 113)like Ethan, the people back in Noah's days acted rebellious. Because of their rebellion, millions of people died ,and because of this Ethan has to live a miserable life with Mattie and Zeena. When Ethan gets ready to write out Zeena that he will be leaving her he is preparing his emotions for the judgement that will be brought upon him ,like when a flood happens citzens have to get prepared with what is coming . 

 
- Drowning- one of our deepest fears:   
     Ethan feels like he is constantly under the public's eye and scrutiny as an outsider who did not grow up in Starkfield, and for his hidden affair with Mattie. The pressure that surrounds him leaves him feeling as if he is drowning in expectation from his peers and neighbors.

Rising Action: Zeena goes away to visit a doctor, the cat breaks her vase while Mattie and Ethan have dinner. Climax: Mattie and Ethan confess their love for each other. Falling action: Mattie and Ethan decide to commit suicide by sledding into a tree, but end up crippling and paralyzing themselves instead. Denouement: Zeena, Mattie and Ethan all end up taking care of each other, Mattie is as bitter as Zeena. 


- atmospherics: the atmosphere of Ethan Frome was very gloomy and depressing. It best fitted the season the story takes place: winter.

The snow which ultimately leads to the shared accident between Ethan and Mattie disrupted them from ever being together. With the both of them in a paralyzed state, their love for each other could never be.

In Ethan Frome, the narrator makes it known that Ethan is unhappy with his marrige with Zeena. However, having Mattie live with he an Zeena restores his hope of ever being happy again. An example from the book would be, "She had an eye to see and an ear to hear: he could show her things and tell her things, and taste the bliss of feeling that all he imparted left long reverberations and echoes he could wake at will. "(pg.10), this quote depicts how much Ethan appreciated and loved having her beautiful and young soul around.

- Ironic use-- April is the cruelest month, sometimes when times seem the cruelest, especially due to rain, is when the best things can happen. 
In this novel there is a lot of irony ,but there is not much about good things happening to any of the characters. Zeena's cruelty leads Ethan to be unhappy with his life because he feels as if he just got married to Zeena feeling pitiful for her. He then tries to seek a better life with Mattie ,but ends up  living a miserable life with both of them. 
- Rainbow--  
God's promise never to destroy the world again; hope; a promise of peace between heaven and earth
  "She stood silent, her hands lying cold and relaxed in his." pg 143. Right before Mattie and Ethan made their life-altering decision they stood together in complete silence and calm. There was a strange sense of peace between them.
 
- Fog-- almost always signals some sort of confusion; mental, ethical, physical "fog"; people can't see clearly
  "Confused motions of rebellion stormed in him." Throughout the entire novel Ethan battles between his feelings of love towards Mattie and his duty towards Zeena.

 "...in distress and oppression of the scene I did not know what to answer. The snow had piled, and a flash of watery sunlight exposed the house on the slope above us in all its plaintive ugliness."  In the very beginning of the novel, the narrator describes the Frome estate while snow is falling around him. He portrays the house as rotting and broken down and the eeriness of the falling snow adds to the decrepitness.
- positively- clean, playful, pure, representative of new life, romantic
 Another example of figurative snow with a more positive outlook would be when Ethan and Mattie went on their walk together in chapter two, in the book it says, "He slipped his arm through hers, as Eady had done, and fancied as it faintly pressed against her side; but neither of them moved." (pg. 40).
