These are mainly to make it a crime to share sexually explicit material without consent and includes deepfake images and video. Instances of deepfake porn mostly affect women and girls and result in degrading and humiliating victims. As we saw in the case at Bacchus Marsh Grammar, the victims were all girls and it involved perpetuating gender stereotypes and was linked with violence towards women such as trivialising rape. I think it is positive that deepfake sexual material is now a crime which may deter some people. However, the online environment is very difficult to police and I doubt it will stop the problem entirely. I think a lot of education needs to take place to challenge gender stereotypes. I also think social media encourages problematic gender stereotypes and behaviours so social media regulation also needs to occur.
