I enjoyed math in grade school and loved problem solving. In 9th grade I started struggling with math and couldn't catch up. During the year, I was asked to move down a level. Since I was told I wasn't good at math, it actually became more difficult for me. It wasn't until I was helping students gain insight in math that I myself started to enjoy math again (14 years later). Now I love math and share how awesome math is with all my students.

In my last year of high school, I did a math test in which i got higher than anyone else in my classroom. At the time there were only three girls in the classroom and the boys were all shocked and wanted to know the make of my calculator!

At school I was in to sports, math, play fighting, science and eating my lunch. Anything to do with literacy (besides talking), was very anxiety inducing and challenging and I avoided those things like the plague. I moved school 8 times and interestingly math and sports were the most transferable skills and subjects. I was usually in the boys math group (with the strong mathematicians). My favourite math experience was being in a math group with four boys when I was about 11(I'm a girl). We got to program a commodore 64 computer. No idea how that related to anything we were doing in math but incidentally we were all really into math but very mouthy and disruptive in class so, sending us to program a computer in cupboard in math was a win win!
