#1 Brown vs Board of Education of Topeka

In my personal opinion, I believe that the Brown vs Board of Education of Topeka is the most influential historical educational event related to the formation of American Education. The Supreme court ruled that separate educational facilities are inherently unequal and that laws requiring white and non-white students got to different schools were illegal. This ruling over turned the Pessy vs Ferguson's "separate but equal." I ranked this ruling at number one because I think that it is extremely important to allow students of all color to receive the same education. All students should have the same opportunities and should all be equal.

The second most influential historical educational event related to the formation of American Education is the Lau v Nichols. This was a way to expand bilingual programs. Many students primary language is something other than the English Language which makes it difficult for them to understand what their teachers are lecturing. This event stated that, "schools must offer students sufficient special instruction to be afforded equal educational opportunity" (334). This allows for students who don't understand because of language barrier to receive the special help that they need in order for them to receive the right education. I still remember when I first started going to school, I couldn't speak a single word of English. My teachers did their best to make sure that I learned the language and that they helped me understand what they were talking about. I still remember feeling so out of place and uncomfortable because I couldn't understand English. This is why I think it is important to ensure that students with language barriers receive special education to help them learn the language and the material

The third most influential historical educational event related to the formation of American education is the Progressive Education Association. The Progressive Education Association was established as a way to create child-centered schools. It was established in attempt to reform education with specific principles. They are:
1. The child should have the freedom to develop naturally
2. Natural interest is the best motive for work.
3. The teacher is a guid, not a taskmaster
4. A student's development must be measured scientifically, not just b grades.
5. Student's general health and physical development require attention
6. The school and the home must work together to meet children's needs.
7. The progressive school should be a leader in trying new educational ideas.
I believe that this is important in expanding the students education. It allows for more opportunities and methods to learn. The students learn by using different instructional methods that can help make the learning fun for the students.

The fourth most influential historical educational event related to the formation of American education is the No Child Left Behind Act. Under this act, states are required to test student in math and reading in grades third through eight. All students are required to meet or surpass the standards. This act is a way to close student achievement gaps and provide all children with the opportunity to obtain a high quality education. I think this act is important and I ranked it in my top 5 because it a way to help ALL students succeed, even those in Title 1 schools and those who are at a disadvantage.

#5 Old Deluder Satan Act

The fifth most influential historical educational event related to the formation of American education is the Old Deluder Satan Act. I believe this act is important because it requires that parents educate their children. They believed that it was important that all children are taught how to read. If the parent couldn't or wouldn't educate their children, then it was the government job to step in and hire a man to teach the children how to read and write. This ensured that children get educated and prevent them from being illiterate.
