<title>The Institute of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians, designated by the acronym FMA (from the Latin Filiarum Mariae Auxiliatricis), is an international religious congregation whose main objective, together with the Salesians of Don Bosco, is the integral formation of young people. With the Salesians, they share the Preventive System (reason, religion and love) as an educational model, based on the continuous and active presence of educators for young people. This is the so-called Salesian Presence.Salesian joy and family atmosphere are two very careful models in Salesian education. One of his maxims is: &quot;educate by evangelizing and evangelize by educating.&quot; At first Mazzarello worked hard to educate and teach sewing to the poorest girls in his town, getting a group of girls in which they shared their lives. Its original name was the Society of the Daughters of Mary Immaculate, opting for the current one when the Salesian movement spread throughout Italy and the world. The Congregation was co-founded on August 5, 1872, together with Saint John Bosco, by the nun Santa María Dominga Mazzarello (1837-1881), born in the Italian town of Mornese. <title>On May 14, 1881, Mother Mazzarello died at just 44 years of age. She was the first Superior General of the Institute and for that year it had 166 sisters, 50 novices and 22 postulants in 26 houses between Italy, France and Uruguay. The simplicity, commitment and wisdom of Mother Mazzarello would be demonstrated when the Catholic Church declared her a saint in 1951 by the work of Pope Pius XII. Earlier, Pope Pius XI had given her the title of co-founder of the Institute of Mary Help of Christians.</title>

<title>The first foundation in Italy was the community of Borgo San. Martino in Alexandria on October 18, 1874.This would be the first link in a fruitful chain. In 1877 the Institute opened its borders to other foundations, among them that of the Community of Nizza Mar in France. They are currently working in 23 provinces present in 22 countries.A college for womenMaría Dominga and her companions would go to experience the first tests of their commitment. Like the first boys who became Salesians with Don Bosco and many of whom had not intended to be religious, the group of Maria Dominga, of great devotion and charity, did not have the idea of being sisters either. On the other hand, in Borgo Alto (Mornés) a school for boys was being built with the help of the local people, but both what would be sisters and what would be the school would be left to Don Bosco.</title>

<title> On May 23, 1872, the first group of sisters was sent by Don Bosco to the recently completed Borgo Alto College, but this act was frowned upon by the community who hoped that the college would be male and that Don Bosco would send Salesians. When Father Pestarino informed the young women of Don Bosco&#39;s intention to found a religious institute with them, Maria Dominga not only was happy with the idea, but also helped to persuade her companions. From 1869 Don Bosco began to mold the Institute with regulations and letters.</title>
