She was the first Superior General of the Institute and for that year it had 166 sisters, 50 novices and 22 postulants in 26 houses between Italy, France and Uruguay. The simplicity, commitment and wisdom of Mother Mazzarello would be demonstrated when the Catholic Church declared her a saint in 1951 by the work of Pope Pius XII.
