Ethics and values by Garry Sims

Read Case Study 5.1 (pp.79-80) contained within the Police Ethics text and consider the following issues: -
(a) in terms of policing in a democracy was the final result concerning the seaman a fair and desirable outcome?
(b) What were the ethical complexities of this matter (what made this a difficult matter for the police to make a decision?)
Made with a little mischief

a) in terms of policing in a democracy was the final result concerning the seaman a fair and desirable outcome?

The final result concerning the seaman has me contradicted, I don't believe it was fair to charge him especially considering the circumstances he was under, however, in saying such possessing an illicit drug is still against the law and no man is seen to ever be above the law. His sentence should have been reduced.

b) What were the ethical complexities of this matter (what made this a difficult matter for the police to make a decision?) Made with a little mischief.

the ethical complexities of this matter and what made it hard for the police to prosecute the man, was that the seaman had a family to support in the UK and with the condition of their finances, he couldn't afford to be convicted and deported back to the UK. An additional factor in which favoured the seaman is that with such a small amount of marijuana, the police could have used their discretion to a certain extent to lower the severity of his sentence.

(a) in terms of policing in a democracy was the final result concerning the seaman a fair and desirable outcome?
it is fair to certain condition and areas. ue to the reading, he was intoxicated while the drugs where found in pocket. However, there are no specific evidence that prove his innocent of not using the drugs.

(b) What were the ethical complexities of this matter (what made this a difficult matter for the police to make a decision?) Made with a little mischief
it was difficult for the police because of his conditions and what is back in the UK of his family situation. Hence, mentioned in the reading, ''He is the sole support for his wife and child in the United Kingdom— they have been living on relief, and this is his first ship in six months''.

To an extend, it is fair as the seaman knew that any form of drug was illicit and if he was involved with this type of career, he should have known that there was a chance he could be caught with it. He should not get away with committing a crime, just because he has family to support back in the UK, he knew wrong from right. His circumstances should be taken into consideration more and his sentence lighter.

(b) What were the ethical complexities of this matter (what made this a difficult matter for the police to make a decision?) Made with a little mischief
The fact that he was supporting his family and that this was their first real chance to have a stable income where they could be happy and comfortable, made it hard for the police to prosecute the man. Also the fact that it was such a small amount of marijuana and the story he told them, had an impact on what they thought was the right thing to do.
