Hitler joined the German Workers Party, which was essentially the Nazi Party. Hitler gave out what was called the Nazi Party Platform (a 25-point programme) to people in Munich. This laid the foundation for the Nazis. The German Workers Party was shaped as a democracy where everyone had a say, but after joining, Hitler said there should be one leader. The rest of the group did not agree, and Hitler later left the party. The people in the party later realized they lost a valuable member, so they told Hitler that if he came back, he could be the leader.

Hitler and the Nazi Party wanted to do a military coup. Hitler tried to overthrow the Weimar Republic, which was called the Munich Putsch. It was also known as the beer hall putsch. They gathered up weapons and planned to take over power in Berlin. Hitler entered the beer hall in Munich and declared that he wanted to take over the government and start a national revolution. The next day, Hitler marched through the streets, but it got very violent when the police got involved. He was arrested two days later for treason. He was initially sentenced to five years in prison but only served nine months.

After the Nazi Party failed in 1923, Hitler tried to recreate the party. He traveled through Germany, recruiting many people and giving tons of speeches. His book, Mein Kampf, which he wrote in prison, was also published this year. He was also the leader of a group called the Sturmabteilung, or SA. They later became loyal to the Nazi Party and started street fights with other political groups.

Hitler was campaigning, and every day the Nazi Party expanded more and more. This year specifically, he tried to make himself more known to the Reichstag parliament because elections were coming up. Around 12 Nazis won a seat in the Parliament out of 491. This was disappointing to the party because they thought they would gain more seats, so they continued campaigning and giving speeches.

The Nazi Party became very popular. The presidential election was coming up, so they used a lot of propaganda to make their opponent look bad. Hitler also said he promised to bring back national pride. This caught many of the Germans' eyes because a lot of them were losing national pride after the previous war. In the presidential election of 1932, Hitler had 30% of the votes, while Paul von Hindenburg had around 50%. Although they lost, this was still very significant because it showed that the Nazi Party was growing in support.

Adolf Hitler became the chancellor of Germany. In February, the Reichstag building was set on fire, which gave Hitler an excuse to pass the enabling act, which gave him dictatorial powers. In March, the Nazis established the first concentration camp at Dachau. On April 1st, the Nazi Party started boycotting businesses owned by Jews, and laws were passed that took away the rights and properties of Jews. In May, the Nazis burned many books that they said weren't German enough. Most of the books were by Jewish, pacifist, and socialist writers. Hitler also signed a corcordat, which is an agreement between a nation and the church. He signed this to basically make everything the Nazi Party was doing more legitimate and for a "good cause."

Hitler had hundreds of political leaders arrested and executed. Similarly, after fearing that the SA had become too powerful, Hitler set out to remove its leader, Ernst Rohm. People called this time a purge or The Knight of Long Knives. The President died on August 2, which gave Hitler the perfect chance to take control of Germany. He took over President Hindensburg's spot and got the title of Führer. In September, the Nazi Party held a rally in Nuremberg, where over 700,000 people attended. Hitler gave a speech that talked all about the importance of unity and that the people are the nation.
