She was at the brink of death when she was able to receive her transplant, ever since she has been devoted to helping others going through the recovery process. Her non-profit organization, Ava's Heart offer services like food, gas, co-payments for medication, and housing to patients. Without post-transplant housing patients cant be listed for a transplant. She owns two locations that house up to five patients at a time at no cost. Thanks to her organization she has been able to help over 175 people with housing. Because Ava has been such a selfless and generous person, she is viewed as a hero to society. She understands how judgemental others can be and strives to help the people she can. Shirley is extremely kind, empathetic, and giving to her community which makes her a hero. Insurance only covered the basic prosthesis but not the kind that would allow her to live a normal life, with the help of donations from organizations she was able to receive the prostheses she wanted. She claims that is what kept her sanity intact and let her do the things she loved. Because prostheses can range anywhere from $10,000 - $100,000 a lot of people can't afford the ones that allow for anything more than walking. She created the Heather Abbott Foundation that has helped more than 42 amputees receive prosthetic devices. Heather is very caring and devoted to helping amputees which makes her a hero. I've been watching his videos for over 3 years and have witnessed him helping his community time after time. Some of his actions include planting over 20 million trees, buying and donating enough food to fill multiple food banks (he does this regularly), adopting every dog from a shelter and finding them owners, buying cars and houses for the less fortunate, giving 200,000$ to people who lost their jobs during the pandemic, and giving 10,000 Christmas presents to kids in foster care and homeless shelters. Overall he is a very kind and generous person, he goes out of his way to help those in need and expects nothing in return. I believe altruism is an archetypal quality of being a hero but that it's not required. This is because some heroes (ex. A Knight) only save people because they are required to by duty, not because it's just something they want to do. I agree with the cognitive explanations for altruism, I am a very empathic person and when I see others struggling I imagine that if I were in that same situation I would want someone to help me therefore I help them. He says it could be a biological trait passed down from when humans lived with smalls groups of people or that we do it for praise but he doesn't necessarily agree with those statements. Pure altruism is doing something for the sole purpose of helping someone, not for any benefit towards yourself. He believes the root for it is empathy and connectedness.
