When the war ended, it was revealed that the Nazis weren't even close to creating an atomic bomb.

it actually proves that the loss of mass is converted in to energy in the process of atomic fusion which upholds the laws of both the conversation of energy and the conservation of mass not that mass= energy. 
( the idea that mass= energy is impossible because energy is the capability to do work and mass is what work affects)
