Circe is a character in Greek Mythology who is dominantly known for her enchanting powers. She is the daughter of the sun god Helios, and has inherited an island, Aeaea. Because she had murdered her husband at the time, Colchis, her father insisted that she live on the island. Moreover, Circe also has the ability to transform many things, which she ultimately does to Odysseus's men by converting them into animals. A defying quote of Circe's ideas concerning the gods states, "I thought once that gods are the opposite of death, but I see now they are more dead than anything, for they are unchanging, and can hold nothing in their hands." In Greek mythology, Circe, the diverse and complex goddess she is, portrays a character of great power, alongside being quite magical and mystical.

The goddess known as Circe, is famous for her incredible knowledge concerning both herbs and potions. Whenever exercised, she has the ability to transform men into a variety of animals. In fact, this is why she cares so much for animals such as wolves, lions, and more. Moving on, she also represents independence, considering the fact that she was exiled to an island, yet still managed to thrive all on her own. Finally, reminiscing on the fact that she provides Odysseus with crucial information as to how he might return to his home, she demonstrates a caring nature, which is essential in the story.

Function in The Odyssey

As Odysseus and his crew approach the palace of Circe, a powerful enchantress, they are all "transformed into wolves, lions, and swine." However, Odysseus, protected by a herb granted upon him by the god Hermes, resists the spell and eventually compels her to restore his companions back to their original form. Additionally, over the course of the story, Odysseus ends up keeping her company for a year. Circe then, acknowledging their friendship, ultimately provides crucial advice for Odysseus' journey and guides him through the obstacles that he must face on his way back home.
