Sperm Whale numbers around the world, especially along the Mediterranean Coast near the Red and Black Seas are suffering from bycatching, performed by fishermen in hopes of catching smaller fish and large squid, which happen to be the prey of these whales. Bycatching has become increasingly problematic and needs to be resolved in a reasonable manner.

The effect of Currents on Bycatching

With smaller fish and squid moving towards their source of nutrients which are carried along with the currents, Sperm Whales then use echolocation, or sonar, which is the use of sound waves to determine the location of objects in efforts to reach their prey. With this, both fishermen and Sperm whales are moving to the same area to hunt down the same fish. Because these whales are following their prey with their use of echolocation and not actual eye site, this causes them to swim directly into the nets that are being used by fishermen in hopes of catching smaller fish and not whales.

It makes sense for these whales to be located on the Mediterranean coast because of their desire to be in warmer waters closer to the equator. There tends to be a higher demand for the prey of Sperm Whales closer to coastlines which increases the likelihood of bycatching marine life that isn't meant to be caught.

Ecosystems without The Sperm Whale...

The short term effects of the removal of the Sperm Whale could actually prove to be beneficial to fishermen because fishermen wouldn't have to compete with Sperm Whales for smaller fish. However, if the Sperm whale were to go extinct or be removed from the ecosystem, it could be detrimental to not only fishermen, but to other marine life as well. Whales in general prove to be very important to the undersea ecosystem as well as very important in maintaining norms of sea life. For example, According to the Columbia Basin Fish and Wildlife News, a study found that whale feces is filled with rich nutrients that include nitrogen, which stimulates the growth of plants. Organisms, such as plankton, that feed the ocean food chain also benefit from tons of whale feces floating on the ocean's surface. The disappearance of this source of natural nitrogen is likely to have a negative effect on plant and food production. Which could prove to change the lifestyle of a fishermen on a large scale.

While there isn't an actual significant solution to decrease the likelihood of bycatching, there are ideas that can be played around with. We came up with a few ideas that might serve to be beneficial if they were taken into consideration. One idea that we came up with was a large cage made of steel with holes small enough to enclose the fish that are meant to come up with the nets. Steel would be the best material to use because it is a heavy metal and could possibly give off a big enough warning sound to whales so that they are able to maneuver around these fishing nets.
