They thought anyone who wasn't following their religion should die or be killed for studying the word of God in the wrong way. The puritans even created colleges: such as Harvard, Yale, and Princeton, so that they could teach men how to be preachers of the bible and so they could spread God's word. They also believed any bad thing to happen was caused by the devil, and that the devil was recruting people to work for him. People suspected of working for the devil were mainly people who were also suspected of being witches.
