Summary

Once gold was discovered in the Black Hills, the U.S. army started moving Native Americans to reservations, but some refused to leave. Troops were sent to persuade them to go. A small group was sent to scout ahead and soon discovered the Indians' camp. George Custer led 200 soldiers in his troop. Custer didn't want to wait for reinforcements and instead advanced. The Indians were waiting and ambushed the soldiers. Hundreds to thousands of Native Americans killed all 200 of the soldiers. Later more soldiers were sent to relocate the Indians and soon they were all moved to reservations.

Custer was a very arrogant and independent man. He isn't reliable and cannot be given great responsibility. A quote from history.com shows how unreliable he is. "Instead of remaining with his troops at Fort Wallace as ordered, he made a hasty journey to Fort Riley to see Elizabeth." Custer left his troops in order to see his wife. He gave no warning, his troops were left to fend for themselves.
