WHAT IS MORPHOLOGY?
Morphology is the study of word structure. Whereas individual phonemes do not have meaning, morphemes are the smallest unit in language that has meaning. For example, in the word "dogs", dog is the free morpheme (it can stand alone) and s is a bound morpheme since "s" by itself only denotes the plural.
HOW CAN I USE MORPHOLOGY TO TEACH ELL'S IN MY CLASSROOM?
Explicitly teaching phonology and morphology to your students not only helps them learn current vocabulary, but has the long term benefit of teaching students how to decode new words. This helps them in reading for academic as well personal reasons.

Teach students words grouped by roots, prefixes, and suffixes.

Pronunciation
Pronunciation is often overlooked, but it is a crucial component of language acquisition. A speaker is only comprehensible if they are understood by the listener. Explicitly teaching pronunciation and providing opportunities for speech are necessary

Jazz Chants - see video samples on Links page
Jazz Chants are a great way to teach rhythm and stress in phrases and sentences. This is often difficult for nonnative speakers to master and aids greatly in comprehension by the listener.

PHONOLOGY
All words are made up of a system of sounds (phonemes) and phonology is the study of these sounds and how sounds combine to form syllables and words in a language.
Why teach phonology and phonemes?
Sounds are the building blocks of a language, and without an understanding of English phonological rules and patterns, ESL students are at a distinct disadvantage in the classroom from their native speaking peers.

Speakers whose L1 is not English have a difficult time learning the English sound system.
International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA)

The relationship between English spelling and its corresponding sound are often mismatched and inconsistent. The English language was described as "the world's most awesome mess" by Mario Pei. (Curzan and Adams 2010, 67). The IPA allows for a concrete representation of sound to symbol as English language learners begin to learn spelling and pronunciation.

Speech segments are divided into the two categories of consonants and vowels.

WHAT IS SEMANTICS?
The study of the meaning of language.
Semantics are often troublesome for ELL's. Just think of how many words in English have multiple meanings and similar spellings. For instance, blue can mean the color blue, "The sky is blue", or it can mean sad, as in "I'm feeling blue today". A bat can be an animal that flies around at night, or it can be a stick used to hit a ball. Students must understand context in order to determine the meaning of particular words within a phrase or sentence.
TEACHING STATEGIES
Use limericks or rhymes
Have students rewrite sentences by changing certain words without changing the meaning
ex. "The boy was feeling down." The boy was sad.
Play videos that demonstrate semantic differences
