Why I decided to take a gap year.

I chose to take one sabbatical year after the high school, because I wanted this to explore the world, to make new knowledge, to discover new cultures, tradition and habits. I like this taste of the adventure, i am an adventurer who is not afraid of anything, in that case go to the other end of the world : in Kenya, it didn’t scare me more than i thought. I find the concept of the gap year brilliant! This allows us to rest after our studies while doing a good deed in the world. That also makes it possible to help our parents financially or to finance our next studies. By opting to make a gap year in Kenya i wanted to return to me useful while bringing my assistance to children of the orphanage, like: entertain them, teach them subjects, or to help has to build a classroom to them in which they will be able to work well. Generally, Kenya is a poor country, therefore I wanted to take part in his economic development by choosing my year over there.

My feeling before leaving.

When I had finished my final preparations of my travel to Kenya, I felt at the bottom of me a certain excitation and desire. As if my heart beat so much extremely that it was going to leave me chest. I had the belly ball but it was rather positive. At a few days of my big departure, it is there that I started to distress and stress, because I was afraid that once over there, I can not be integrated into the children. I was afraid of their reaction by me seeing, if they would appreciate me immediately or if on the contrary it took them a time of adaptation to integrate me into them. I also was afraid to leave France which is my country, it was my first voluntary travel in a country far from my small daily comfort. What also distressed to me was the fact of leaving my buddy alone, far from me.

Thomas is the person essential to my life then I wondered how that was going to be Kenya without him. But I knew that I was above all an adventutess.

My feelings when I arrive in Kenya and the living conditions of orphans.

When I arrived at Kenya, it was another world, well-sure I expected that before leaving but not as much. People are pleasant and polished. Kenya is a country enthralling and discharging of wealths. One finds over there a framework natural disorientating with single landscapes and his wild life. Although Kenya is part of the countries of Africa to develop more there remain some poor places nevertheless. I arrived in the town of Nanyuki which is at three hour drives of the capital, Nairobi. Nanyuki is located in the area of Laikipia.
Once I deposited my business in my family of reception, we went to the orphanage for my first day with the children. the reception was very cordial when I saw them, I was easily integrated into them showing them my sens of humor.
As regards the place where they live that surprises at first. the orphanage is built with the hand, in scrap metal and the ground does not have any coating. One finds there two rooms, a dormitory and a canteen for approximately 60 pupils.

The conditions to manage to have drinking water in this country are very complicated. The orphanage where I was, they used plastic bottles to purify the water themselves. They were doing thus : the bottles were on one side painted black and on the others side exposed to the sun. They were then placed on a black scrap metal so that the sun types on the bottles. Once eight hours treatment to pass, water was finally drinkable.

The sewerage system in the town of Nanyuki is overloaded. The inhabitants relieve themselves anywhere, because there is not enough toilet. That causes an obstacle with the development objectives of the country. The infrastructures of treatment of waste waters are not up to date thus the country generates many waste.

The children sleep in mixed collective dormitories. They have bunk beds but unfortunately they do not have rather thus some of them sleep with several in mattresses posed on the ground. In the same way they do not lay out enough bed linen to be appropriate for their needs.

My days at the orphanage were quite charged. The morning, me and some presenters of the center prepare the breakfast for the children who had to go to school. Then we wake them up at 7 am every morning so they can have time to prepare. Once the children being at the school we dealt with smallest who were taken out of the school system. They also had lunch and one then helped them to wash oneself and to get dressed. In the morning they were learning in the center: English so that they can speak this language correctly. Then, they had the right to 2 hours of games collective between them, which enabled us to deal with the tasks administrative, domestic and daily. Sometimes we organized with the children of the play activities and creative like the song, the dance, or the drawing. I remember that they adored that. The evening, when the teenagers were returning from school and that everyone was finally joined together, we teach to them from the courses of hygiene. In a country such as Kenya where the children misses hygiene cruelly it is important to learn to them as of their more young ages. Each evening they ate between them and finished their duties until the hour to sleep. 3 times in the week, the presenters were divided into two groups. A group to deal with the children and another to improve the orphanage. That is to say create classrooms to teach, improve the dormitories and the conditions of sleep of the children. As well as finding solutions to improve the living conditions general. Luckily in the evening, I get enough rest to be attacking the next day and give conclusive results.

The more the days passed and the more the fateful date arrived at great steps. I did not want to leave them, not after having lived as much on thing in their company. I knew that deep inside me i would miss them, I had attached myself to them more than I thought before leaving for Kenya Kenya. At the end of one year spent with the children and the team, they belonged from now on to my family. They were engraved in my heart forever. Never I would forget them. Then, the day arrived and I cried tears of joy and at the same time of unhappiness. It was very moving between them and me. One had created a kind of cocoon and of complicity between us. I could not leave them however it was necessary. the last days we had a snack and to sing all together for my departure then they accompanied me to the entrance of the center and we made a big collective hug. . After that I left leaving behind me my torn heart.

This experiment much changed me and brought. It was my first voluntary work and surely not the last. While arising from the orphanage I felt happy, because I had just made a charitable action for a splendid cause: that of the children. Now, I feel more responsible and more mature. I see the life differently, of another eye I would say. I advise with everyone to live this adventure, because it is out of ordanary and very enriching on the life. It makes it possible to the people to open the spirit, to be more with listening and attentive with the needs for people who surrounds us. During my first sabbatical year, I learned more about myself than while in three years of study. For summary this experiment is a real opportunity as regards personal development. Moreover I think of setting out again has Nayunaki, to remake one year near the children, because I miss them and I became aware that what I want to do in my life, it is to help those which in one tle more need.
