Today I’ll be planning my meet and make video, adding more photos to my portfolio slides that Kathy got us to start yesterday and I also think I might rewatched the Baltic video that was put on classroom a couple weeks ago just to jog my memory.

For my Meet & Make video I had the idea of producing and instructing a simple easy to make graphic design tote bag, as of now I’m not sure if I would want to actually demonstrate how to make the bag with calico as I would want it to be directed to a wide range of audiences and sewing might not be safe for someone young to recreate, but on the other hand I could make it so it would be parent guided for people of a certain age which makes it more of a bonding exercise and also ensures more safety. The idea is that they would come up with there own design to be put onto the calico tote bag via screen printing, this would allow their imagination run wild, be involved, be hands on and get a small taste of what our course and what this industry is about.

For the video I definitely plan to have music on in the background as I think it is a great way to keep your audience engaged.

I also plan on making it a voice over video and making it as simple as possible so it is easy for all age groups to understand.

I also think it’s really important to be a bit comedic in your video to engage the audience even more and bring humour into it.

It would end up being something like this however they wouldn’t be predesigned, it would be the audience designing and screen printing it on, I believe that creativity is such an important thing to express no matter what your age.

Following from my plan, obviously I can’t just jump into it, I need to do some practice with screen printing since it has been a long while since I’ve done it and I want to make sure I’ve built on that skill a lot before teaching it. To practice this when I am at college I want to give it multiple goes and practice on plain pieces of calico.

Ones drawing these graphics, I edited them slightly so the background resembled the colour and look of basic calico to give a more accurate look of how it would look on a calico tote bag

I found these plain tote bags which would be perfect for my meet and make plan, especially because they are eco friendly. We always want to make sure that what we are doing is sustainable as possible

I found this screen printing tutorial on YouTube, this has helped give me more of an idea on what a tutorial should look like. I think this screen printing tutorial is really effective because it is so simple and straight to the point.

This design was heavily inspired by Keith Haring, at first the design was red but I found that blue made it seem a bit more unique despite being so obviously in the style of the legendary pop artist.

For this, I decided to invert the image and alter it slightly so it was more simple, I also slightly changed the hue.

For this, I decided to keep the image inverted, however, I changed the hue so it resembled a more normal red heart.

This design was previously drawn by hand, however I decided to copy and paste it into photoshop to play around with it, changing the hues, and playing around with placements of different parts of the image.

I decided to change the background to black because I felt this design would look better on an all black calico tote bag. I also changed the hue.

For this design, I decided to change the hue from the previous experiment, except I changed the saturation so the image was a lot more vibrant. I really like this loud design, especially, with the black background.

For this experiment, I decided to alter the positioning of the cut image, I also decided to change the hue of both cuts to create more of a colourful, abstract design.

For my final experiment I decided to keep the same positioning, however, I completely took the colour out of one of the cuts, and with the other half I inverted the colours that were used in the previous experiment. The colourful half gives me a heat map vibe.

Additional research and considerations

As per A03 on the assessment matrix you must show that "consideration is given to ethical and environmental impact"- have a think about this and include some discussion in your planning.

I will definitely look more into the ethical and environmental side of things to make it as eco friendly as possible.

I have found inspiration in music to make my meet and make video more engaging, whether its movies, advertisements, etc - music in the background always helps engage the audience and draw them in even more.

YOUR TARGETS/ PLAN FOR THE WEEK TO ACHIEVE THIS.

My plans for the next week is to practice more with screen printing before I start the video and making process. I will be practicing on scrap pieces of calico and then maybe do a test on a tote bag. I will also print off a few test designs to play around with. I aim to have my actual video plan started and finished over the weekend too. On Wednesday I will be recording all the footage I need for the meet & make video so I can edit it on the night and have it ready for the deadline day.

This weekend - Plan the meet and make video

Tuesday - Practice screen printing on calico some more to develop skills (could even come in earlier to do this)

Wednesday - Day of recording the screen printing process, cutting out of stencils, trying a range of designs from more simple to more complicated

Thursday - Edit the screen printing video and upload to the drive

Friday - Upload video to the google drive

Are you providing them with a template for the stencil?

I will not be providing them with a stencil as I want them to do whatever design they want, so the plan would be for them to find designs on google or pinterest, print them off and then turn whatever designs they like into a stencil.

Have you made any short videos/ reels of yourself doing this to test the time it takes and how engaging it is?

These could also form evidence of problem solving and evaluation.

As of now I have not, however on Tuesday I could do a test run of this to get used to it more, or I could even do it over the weekend, however I do plan on using subtitles.

What exhibition or theme are you wanting to create your video on? Hand stitching techniques
What am I going to teach them and how do I demonstrate this? I will be teaching them how to stitch by hand, and will be showing this in a quick tutorial video.
What materials will they need? Think about cost, messiness, age suitability. For the tutorial you will be needing a needle, thread and scissors, honestly the cost of these things are not high considering they able to be used again in the future. and because of the sharp needle children cant use it because they could hurt themselves, I would say between the ages 6 to 10 they can start using the needle, and o course above that.
Is what you’re asking safe for the people taking part? I would say that it is safe up to a point, because your using a needle and it is sharp and also tiny which you can drop it and it would be difficult to find, and then end up standing on it and it would cause pain and bleeding. so you have to be careful especially when your having little children around.
Who is your audience? Eg. maybe you’re thinking of a younger audience? Do you need to communicate differently? I would say my audience everyone over the age 6 can do this, but to target younger audience I would have to make the video as creative as possible so that it can be engaging as the youth tend to find this boring easily.

Are the instructions very clear so people can follow easily? Technical considerations:
- Where will be suitable to create your video? On a desk with good lighting
- What equipment will you use. A phone/camera stand and a phone/camera, then for the video I would be using the material, thread, needle and scissors.
- How will I engage with my audience? Eg. will I present on camera or voice overs? I think either would be fine I would try both and see which one would be best for the video.
- Will you use live action/footage, animation, slideshow of stills, skill demonstration? I would be using live action only showing my hands.
- Do I need to think about sound or music? I will need to think about music because I think music would be quite good for the video. If I was to talk in the video I would only have to do instrumental music, as my voice will be a lot clearer.

I think overall my meet and make video went very well. I am really proud of my final screen printed product and I think my explaining of the process was very simple and easy to follow. The whole process made me a lot more comfortable with screen printing and is definitely something I will consider bringing into my FMP. I think that the visual quality of the video I produced could’ve been better however when trying to improve the quality to 1080p or 4k it didn’t seem to actually look better. Along with this, I think I could’ve maybe done some more screen printing examples to show case the unlimited options when it comes to screen printing. I’ve learnt a lot from this project, I’ve realised the importance of creating tutorials and providing examples for people that may be clueless when it comes to screen printing.
