Jamaica has a tropical climate, that means it is hot during the whole year. The biggest difference in the seasons is how much it rains and the humidity. The rainy season is from April to October. It is also very hot during these months. The north-east trade-winds affect the rain patterns too. Trade-winds are winds that blow from November to March. The capital of Jamaica, Kingston, is on the South Coast, is usually warmer than the rest of the island and also don't get as much rain because the mountains and hills protect it from the trade-winds. During December- March the island can be affected by Norte. Norte is a cool wind that comes from the United States. But it doesn't get cold, it just lowers the temperature a little bit at night time. Since Jamaica is an island in the Caribbean, there is the chance they can have a tropical cyclone from the Atlantic Ocean. These happen in August, September and October. Hurricanes can come too, but they are more likely from June all the way to November.

There are a lot of different nationalities that live in Jamaica, from descendants from colonist to the new immigrants. The people that make up the island of Jamaica come from many different cultures and ethnicities. Even though many of the people are different, they are all accepting because they know that being different is what makes their culture unique.
Even though there are so many different people, the primary language of the island is English. Just like in the United States, how we use a word to describe something in Texas, they may use a different word in New York, they do that in Jamaica too! The language is different from village to village. Their words come from English, Spanish, Rastafarian, and African. The food in Jamaica uses a lot of spices, with Jerk being one of the most popular! They eat a lot of seafood, but more traditional dishes are goats head soup and cow foot stew.
Jamaicans are also very religious people, they have the most churches per square mile. They have many different religions, from Christians to Rastafarians.

The very first people to live on Jamaica were the Tainos. They originally came from South America and traveled all around the Caribbean. This tribe called the island Xaymaca, which means the land of wood and water. The Spanish explorers are the ones who changed the X to a J and it became Jaymaca. The Tainos created the hammock! Many of the other islands fought with the Carib tribes, but not the Tainos. They just fished and farmed. But when the Spanish arrived in the 1500s, the Tainos fought with them. The Spanish were making the Tainos slaves. The Tainos were almost completely gone. Settlers then began moving to the town that is now called Spanish Town, and then they were attacked a lot by the British. It took almost 5 years for the Spanish to beat the British. The Spanish eventually moved to Cuba, but the few that did stay got together to make the Maroons, who still exist today. Sugarcane plantations were a big source of business for Jamaica back then in the 1700s. In 1834 the British made the Emancipation Act that freed slave kids and made the adult slaves learn work skills. During World War II Jamaica was an allied base, but what made the island successful was tourism and bauxite exports. In 1962 Jamaica became independent.

Jamaica is an island that is located in the Caribbean. The beaches are mostly white sand beaches. It is the third largest island in the Caribbean. It has a coastal plain, but is mostly mountainous. There are a lot of bays, cays, and islands. There are the Eastern Mountains, which protect the capital Kingston from the trade-winds, the coastal plains, and the central valleys and plateaus. There are over 100 rives in Jamaica, but they are mostly really small and underground. They go through the Limestone region. The biggest river is the Black River, and the longest is the Rio Minho. The Limestone plateau covers 2/3 of the island. There are villages, towns, caves, sinkholes and caverns in the plateau. The Blue Mountains are in the East. The highest point on the island is in the Blue Mountains. On the West side of the mountains is the area that is harsh. It is called the Cockpit Country. There are a lot of hills there.

The people in Jamaica dress in a lot of bright colors and their clothes are usually handmade from calico fabric. Calico fabric is similar to plaid. They also wear a head scarf, it comes from the Rastafarian culture. Many of the clothes that they wear have red, green and gold. These are also the colors of the Ethiopian flag.
The people in Jamaica are very artistic too, the island has produced many different artists, and even musicians like Bob Marley.
