"...of course it wasn't really just Patrick, it was everyone--all her friends. She didn't want them to see her talking to me. Suddenly I knew Kyle must not figure too prominently in the social order or she never would have asked him to deliver the note" (LaBan 128).

This quote has magnitude because it shows the readers another picture of how Tim views himself. He is self-conscious, but he is also aware of how people view him. He is not trying to be someone he is not. This quote also shows how Tim is trying to get the lay of the land at Irving. when talking about Kyle. It also proves Tim is not immune to judging others, as they often judge him.

How do you think Vanessa will continue to talk to Tim if she is concerned about her social status? How do you think Tim will react if this continues?

"They were all getting ready to sled. He was scared. There were trees at the bottom, despite what anyone said, he could see that. Students from the Irving School had been doing it for years, they kept saying. They hadn't lost one yet" (LaBan 135-136)

This quote has magnitude because it shows that something dramatic happened or happens. This was a dream that Duncan had one night and he woke up, not wanting to remember anything about it. This could possibly be foreshadowing what happens with Tim's story that Tim left Duncan. The magnitude of a possible disaster at the sledding hill could influence Irving forever.

How does this quote tie into Tim and Patrick planning the senior outing? Why would Duncan have a dream like this especially if he was a junior?

"A tragedy is a play or literary work in which the main character---that would be tragic hero---suffers greatly and is brought to ruin. Usually this suffering and ruin come about because the main character's flaw or weakness and his or her inability to deal with the lot he or she has been given. Patrick smiled the smuggest smile i have ever seen. I wanted to stare him down, but I couldn't. I looked at the ground, not sure why what he had said felt so personal " (Laban 150-151).

I think that this shows magnitude because it seems like something dramatic will happen later on to the main character which is Tim and that's why he said it felt personal so like if it going to happen.

If something bad ends up happening what do you think will end up happening to Tim?

Tim ponders why life has been so unfair to him while Patrick seems to have everything in the world. Tim doesn't understand how Patrick can have it all; Tim wishes he did not have to try so hard to be happy or fit in.

Do you think that Tim will continue to envy Patrick as the book continues? Patrick was tall and handsome with perfect skin. Everyone liked him, and people expected to see Vanessa with someone like that. That was the right world order (or should I say chaos?) at the Irving School." (LaBan 157)

This quote has magnitude because it is showing what people expect from the social hierarchy. This is Tim now thinking that he will never be good enough for someone like Vanessa just because that's what everyone else thinks. He is not confident in himself and this is showing how much he worries about what everyone else is going to say or do about his actions.

What would you think if you were Tim? But after I spent the first 2 classes being completely distracted by her, I started to think it might not have been such good luck and forced myself to focus" (Laban 149).

I think that this shows character development because in this quote all Tim can think about is Vanessa and this could become chaos because he wont be able to focus in classes and he will start to get behind.

Do you think that something bad will happen to Tim because he was not focusing in class. (LaBan 165).

This quote has magnitude because it shows how Tim is feeling about the situation. It also has a little bit of foreshadowing for what is going to come about later in the story. He seems worried at what he had just done and how that was going to affect him. It also seems like he wishes he wouldn't have said it, or would've said it differently.

Do you think what he said is going to affect him in the future? I had built up every gesture in my mind to mean so much, and I was now sure she had feelings for me. The reason she wasn't more open about it, I told myself, was because she didn't know how to get away from Patrick."
(LaBan 157)

I believe there is magnitude in this passage because it can still be connected to and understood by young adults today. Many people nowadays face heartache and heartbreak for this reason, which is of feeling not enough for that one person. On the other end of this complication, Vanessa seems as though she would like to leave Patrick, but doesn't want to face the harsh reality of judgement that comes with it.

If you were Vanessa, would you leave Tim, even though there's the possibility of being judged and being treated poorly?

Something that we're all in on, that we plan together."

This quote is important because it's showing Patrick being sort of nice to Tim. The first time they met, Patrick got in Tim's face about him hanging out with Vanessa. In the bathroom, Patrick was in Tim's face and calling him weird and telling him to leave Vanessa alone. Then all of a sudden Patrick is nice to Tim, inviting Tim to hang out with him and his friends so that Tim will feel as if he fits in. This shows Patrick's character development, he was rude to Tim, at first, but he's slowly become nicer to him.

Do you think Patrick is genuinely being nice to Tim?
