Identify Diffusion

Summary: During this stage, an adolescent may not think about particular identify until they experience a crisis or are otherwise compelled to adult to identify. During this identify status, there is low commitment to an identify as well as low exploration.

Example: When I was a kid, I never thought of what kind of clothes I wanted to wear. I usually just wore whatever I found whether I liked it or not and I never explored what kind of clothes I like. In this case, my identify would be diffused because I have not explored clothes styles.

Identify Foreclosure

Summary: Foreclosure involves committing to an identify prematurely without exploration or choice. This occurs when parents hand down their traditions and commitments and the adolescent does not make a conscious choice.

Example: When I was a kid, my parents had a big influence on my life. Both of my parents played sports through college and they passed that down onto me. They encouraged me to play sports and without really knowing enough about them, I went and played sports anyways.

Summary: During this stage, individuals who are in the midst of a crisis, whose commitments are either absent or are only vaguely defined, but who are actively exploring alternatives.

Example: In this stage, I explored the world of oral surgeons. This was something my friends and peers did not know much about but I enjoyed, I now read books about them and hope to pursue it in college.

Summary: The main idea is that one's sense of identify is determined largely by the choices and commitments made regarding certain personal and social traits.

Example: When i was in 8th grade, I only knew kids that went to Prairie View but then I met kids from Patrick Marsh and I found people and made friendships with them and they still are my friends and they love me for who I am today.
