In my own online classes, I talked with my principal about the non-examples of norms my students were exhibiting, and we sent a list to all parents and students about behavior expectations to let students know that if cameras and audio are not enabled, they would not receive participation credit for the class and may be marked absent if they refuse to participate at all. I also disabled backgrounds and the ability of students to rename themselves.

• Students who work in cluttered spaces or rooms with too much stimulation (loud speakers, TVs, toys, pets) get distracted and are more likely to play with their hamster or watch something other than the class.

This way, students' assignments are organized and easily accessible when learning online, as they simply have to open an app like Seesaw, find their assignment, and begin work or look over corrections.
• The school and teachers should outline what is expected of students and their surrounding environment before online teaching begins to allow parents and students to make alternative arrangements, like working from an empty classroom at school. Giving out a newsletter or message to parents would also allow families time to clean and create a space for their children that is free of clutter and distraction.

•   As a class, the teacher should elicit what behaviors the students believe should be norms so that students acknowledge acceptable behavior and the behaviors they should avoid, creating their own promises to do these things.
• In primary classrooms, or classes with young learners, have daily circle time or carpet time. At the end of the day, circle time can be a place where students can "clear the air" about any events that happened during the day and apologize to each other. They can also use this time to acknowledge how well each other is doing and give out compliments about their behaviors that day. While the one at the beginning of the day can be used to go over rules for classroom behaviors.
• When students are giving speeches or presentations, have students complete not only self-evaluations but peer evaluations that include questions about their behavior as a listener during the presentations so that students can hold each other accountable and be more self-aware of their behaviors.
• In my own class, I instruct students not to begin speaking until they have everyone's attention and respect, and I let the class know every day that they need to save questions to the end so as not to interrupt their peers, as they may be nervous already. If there is still a student with disruptive behavior, their grade will be affected, but the immediate solution is to sit or stand near that student to keep them focused and remove distractions from around their area.

• Student profiles for online students will be visible online with grades and current status in class.  This will make it possible for students to keep track of their grade and work completed.
