Beatrice is beautiful and wanted by many, as a rose is, but keeps herself guarded as a real rose does with thorns. It also symbolizes how she is nice to look at, and up close may hurt you with her quick wit, or thorns.

Beatrice is beautiful to the eye but also one of the strongest people in the play, with rough edges and tougher than most.

They are major female leads that keep certain characters aligned, provide advice, and ultimately keep the story interesting.

This comment made by Beatrice is said in the beginning of the play, directed to Benedick, in one of their first quarrels. There isn't much context as to why they fight, it simply starts by just one of them saying something sarcastic and it being unable to cease. I chose this famous quote of Beatrice's as it really displays her quick wit and clever brain. Benedick says she squawks at him like a parrot teacher, but her response is so fast and cunning for him. It was quite the intelligent way to turn the argument around. It just proves her confidence in herself by saying how she'd still rather be herself, even if that be a bird, than be Benedick. It shows how she puts her guard up and pushes it off, trying to not show how she takes offense. She says it proudly, almost accepting she preaches like a parrot, but still must add she's better.

"He that hath a beard is more than a youth, and he that hath no beard is less than a man; and he that is more than a youth is not for me, and he that is less than a man, I am not for him" (Lines 29-32, pg. 40)

Leonato and his family are discussing how Beatrice seems to never be satisfied with any man. Antonio and Hero back up Leonato and give Beatrice several suggestions on men, or ask her questions about marriage. Beatrice seems to disregard everything they say and relentlessly makes comebacks for every question, as if it were a quarrel with Benedick. Her confidence and high regard for herself is displayed here, with how she seems to pick apart any small detail about a man to prove why they are undeserving of her. Beard or no beard, neither will work for her. she holds herself to such high, unrealistic standards. However, underneath her confidence and quick wit to explain why she cannot find love, may be insecurity. Rather than believing no man is good for her, thus she is not married, she may feel inside that she is just incapable of finding the one and blames it on such small details using her intellect. She often puts up a guard to protect her true feelings, such as feeling lonely in terms of love, using her clever words. I chose this quote as it displays more than one aspect of her personality.

"As strange as the thing I know not. It were as possible for me to say I loved nothing so well as you, But believe me not, and yet I lie not, I confess nothing, nor I deny nothing" (Lines 268-269, pg. 170) / "I love you with so much of my heart that none of it is left to protest" (282-3, pg. 172)

This last pair of quotes take place in Act 4, after Hero has been wrongly accused of being unfaithful. Benedick stays with Beatrice, rather than with his friends, a first sign of his love. He asks how he can help, then says how strange it is that he loves her more than anything in this world. Beatrice begins to stumble over her words and isn't sure how to react, in the first quote. This is quite strange considering her quick wit, but knowing she loves him too she wants to admit it and fall into his embrace-- yet the walls she built won't allow her to. She hides her feelings from Benedick until a short while later when he swears she loves him. She is uneasy when it comes to loving, since she has been so protective of her feelings her whole life. I chose this first quote because it shows her timidness to love, but that she is loving and wants to love, and this shows her protective nature. This pairs greatly with the second quote as it displays her walls coming down, and her loving side finally blossoming; she becomes unafraid. Suddenly, when Benedick admits his feelings, and he announces her feelings for him because she won't, she becomes loving. She realizes she cannot lie anymore and beings to trust him. In the second quote, she expresses how dearly she loves him now that she is comfortable and caring. This endearing side to Beatrice has always been present, just not seen until Benedick is able to help her escape her shell. She definitely is a loving woman despite her wit.
