Whenever I think of architecture, the first thing that comes into mind is merely limited to the concept of buildings, houses, and infrastructures. Honestly speaking, my perception of architecture only includes design, constructions, and restoration or remodeling of existing buildings.

Fortunately, upon taking up this course, I was able to learn that architecture is more than just planning, designing and constructing buildings.

According to the readings, the evolution of architecture resulted in man's attempt not only to create dwelling places that are efficient in space and that has a sense of permanence for protection, but also an attempt to provide beauty and aesthetics to his surroundings.

As we have established in the previous lessons, there are actually different kinds of Architecture – an example of this would be classical and modern architecture.

I would like to explore more about how and where the architects get their architectural inspiration. In this way, I will be enlightened on how they manage to put their visualizations into reality. In addition to that, it is also interesting to know how a certain building or infrastructure becomes a historical landmark.

✔️C L A S S I C A L
Classical architecture is often linked into Greek cultural style of building, in which vertical arrangements are called "column", while on the other hand, horizontal arrangements are typically known as "Entablature." It contains three orders – Doric, Ionic and Corinthian.

The Doric order, probably the earliest, remained the favourite of the Greek mainland and western colonies. The Ionic order developed in eastern Greece; on the mainland, it was used chiefly for smaller temples and interiors. Lastly, Corinthian was by far the most popular. Its main characteristic is an ornate capital carved with stylized acanthus leaves.

The architectural works during this period reflect the values and beliefs of the people who built them.

WHY IS IT CONSIDERED A FINE ART?

The Statue of Liberty was constituted in a joint effort between Frederic Bartholdi and Alexandre-Gustave Eiffel. This artwork was inaugurated in the year October 1886, in commemoration to the lasting friendship between France and the United States. It was also believed to be a colossal neoclassical sculpture inspired by a Roman Goddess named Libertas which is made out of copper and iron making the sculpture appear powerful.

The subject of the sculpture is holding a torch above her head with her right hand, while the other is carrying a tabula ansata with the inscription "JULY IV MDCCLXXVI," the day of the declaration of independence of the United States. Similarly, the seven spikes on her crown represent the earth’s seven continents and oceans. If you are going to look at it you would see that the statue has a balanced proportion at her feet, which also projects a broken chain of slavery, which is an obvious symbol of freedom and glory of the Americans.

Lastly, the positioning of the statue is pleasing to the eyes since it was placed at the entrance of the port of New York, serving as the gateway to the United States, eventually making it one of the world’s most recognizable landmarks.
