International-mindedness is an exciting idea to me. I grew up in a small town and never imagined meeting so many people from so many different backgrounds. I think it boils down to empathy. International-minded in being aware and respecting each other no matter where we come from.

Being a global citizen is a responsibility we must take on. The world is becoming smaller with the ease of communication and access to other cultures. Whether you like it or not, we are all involved in a global community. Being a citizen in that community requires work and patience but we can achieve great things through collaboration. Global citizens not only respect other cultures but work hard to familiarize themselves with cultures they are unaware of.

Access to the internet and news allows schools to utilize current events and culturally relevant topics to engage with students. Schools strive for a inclusive environment and acceptance that students can carry with them through life. Subjects are presented to students and interconnected, allowing students to experience the type of connections they will see as global citizens.

I consistently try to utilize topics and ideas that are relevant to the city we live in and relevant to the global community. I emphasize that breakthroughs in science will guide us to future technology. Discoveries in China will affect the world, even if you live in Brazil! Different cultures and nationalities open new perspectives on topics discussed globally. I emphasize the importance of becoming and staying informed on current events from all over the globe.

I help my students understand the importance of international understanding through empathy and compassion. In an international classroom, discussion are bound to arise that lead to close mindedness. It is my duty to inform students that judging someone based on their culture, gender, sexual orientation or appearance is unacceptable. Students stereotype which needs to be addressed and discussed how harmful it can be. Usually a rude comments leads to an enlightening discussion where students can grow and learn.

I assigned a project that allowed students to play the role of a genetic counselor. Each group was assigned a genetic disease and had to counsel a pregnant woman (me) about the actions she needs to take. This lead to certain terms being used such as "your baby won't be normal" or "it will look weird". These are obviously very upsetting terms, especially to a pregnant mother like myself. We had a great discussion about how words carrying meaning and even words that seem harmless can be interpreted negatively.
