She wasn't really known in her neighborhood due to her mother Lisa sending her to Williamson Prep. The author did an excellent job at portraying Khalil and showing how good of a person he was before he died. In addition she portrayed his death really well and also made it to where the reader got more connected to Khalil and his life. I feel these parts could be offensive to certain people. also the things she said to different people. for example when she asked Maya if she had a cat for thanksgiving due to her being Chinese. Sometimes reading this book was inspiring because Starr went from not wanting anyone to know she was the witness and doing small little things to stand up for Khalil’s death to participating in protests, going to court and doing interviews. I think this was very inspiring because it shows Starr going out of her comfort zone to stand up for her best friends after his death. At other times of the book it was heartbreaking or sad due to the little breakdowns Starr would have throughout the book.
