Clon de Film sound by Beatriz Oria

To begin thinking about film sound, post a link to a scene in which you think sound is relevant (music, sound effects, spoken language) and write down a few lines explaining what you think sound adds to the meaning of the scene. For example, what it emphasises or what it suggests. I have added a very simple example. You are also encouraged to comment on other people's posts.

In this scene, which takes place at the beginning of the film, Celine Dion's song 'All by Myself' reinforces the protagonist's status as someone who is unwillingly single. The lyrics voice her desire not to be alone, and her identification with the song is emphasised by the fact that she is lip syncing along to it with a lot of passion. Her loneliness is further reinforced by the sound coming from the telephone announcing that she has no new messages.

I´m Sara Galeano.
The soundtrack created by Bernard Herrmann, is really important in this scene of Pyscho because of giving extra information about what is going to happen. The sound is terrifying and intriguing as well. It announces the viewer the moment in which Marion is stabbed by Norman Bates in the shower.

While Chrissie and the boy are running into the beach, the emphasis is on the heavy breathing and in the intermittent shouts (he does not agree in taking the bath). In the shot of Chrissie swimming, she does it calmly, in silence. Suddenly, the low-volume notes played by violins and a kind of triangle, advance that something bad is going to happen. The change in the music, faster than before and played by violins, confirms the shark-attack. This change builds up tension and dramatism which is reinforced by the shouts of the girl. After the attack, there is a continuos high-pitched note and next, notes played by a xylophone in decrescendo in order to show suspense which carry again a shark attack. Together with those sound is the sound of the buoy's bell. Finally, while the shark is ending eating Chrissie, the music is hectic with the violins playing fast and loudly and with no movement in the water. At the end, there is silence as she has been eaten. There is only the repetitive sound of buoy's bell.

I am Sara González.
At the beginning of 2001: A Space Odyssey, we can see this scene where music is linked to intelligence. Music shows us the monkey's intelligence process: the more conscience, the louder the music. At first, the monkey doesn't know what to do with the bones, that's why the music is soft; but once he realizes his ability, the music increases. I think that the sound in this clip reinforces the beginning of intelligence and therefore, of evolution.

My name is Estela García.
In this clip we can see that music has a relevant role. When we are able to see the ring a non-diegetic music can be heard in a very low volume with a low pitch. This can be related with the pitch of the character's voice which is also low as a whisper. This is repeated at the end of the clip but with a different music. This time the character does not speak so we can focus on the non-diegetic music which reinforces the importance of the ring.
The music that we hear when we see the ring is low-pitched and has a threatening sound wanting to convey that the ring is something dangerous and the representation of evil. When he drops the ring we can hear an intensified metallic and diegetic sound wanting to highlight the weight and relevance of the ring during the whole film.

I am Sara Claramunt. I have found sound to be of extraordinary importance in this clip (and throughout the whole film) because we do not get as many dialogues as in any other conventional sci-fi and fantasy film. In the first scene, the music is introduced in a subtle way as soon as Laura (Scarlett Johansson) asks the man in her van (Joe Szula) if he has a girlfriend. In other words, the music starts as soon as the hunting does. The violins stop for a moment when Joe enters the house and starts undressing. However, sound does not disappear altogether, we still hear some kind of noise that probably simulates, what for me would be, the sound of a pace. This pseudo-silence plays an important role too, anticipating his future silence (death) in the film when entering the building, but also creating suspense before we face a most peculiar murder. The music resumes until we see the body of the man completely sunken into the floor. In this unconventional movie, music does not only help the spectator foresee the death of the victims but it also depicts the horror and abnormality of the film. It makes the spectator realise that there is, indeed, something wrong with the killer. In fact, the revelation at the end of the movie is always cued by the music. The high pitch, the detuned violins and the pacing sound create a creepy and bizarre atmosphere which portray the nature of the character: she is an alien.

It shows the spectator how exhausted she is from dancing and how the drug she has taken is affecting her. The music reflects how confused she is as it constantly pauses and resumes. The way she feels is emphasized through editing. For example, the clip slows down and, at the same time, there is a superimposition of shots of Dani dancing from different angles. This shot ends with a jumpcut and then the clip goes back to a normal speed. I found this sudden change rather striking.

In this clip, and also in the entire film, the sound of Charlie's tongue clicking is used as a prop to show the presence of Charlie's ''ghost'' at that moment. In this scene the clicking sound comes from different directions in order to make the spectator as confused as Peter is in that moment. Also, I think that the sound of bones cracking when his arm is raised is important because it suggests that this movement is not natural, as he is possesed. The music is also important because it is very tense and it suddenly stops when he stops being possesed.

I am Sara Herrera. I find Sound in this clip very interesting. The clip consists of a chess game between two professional players. At the beginning of the clip, Georgi Girev introduces himself while a soft but suspenseful music is sounding in the background. This music in the background is going to last almost to the end of the clip and it is going to vary depending on the action. This clip does not include a lot of spoken language and, in fact, we do not get to hear Beth Harmon's voice, which is uncommon as she is the protagonist of this series. Her silence may suggest that she is extremely focused and does not want to get distracted, she is there to play and win. When the chess game starts, apart from the background music we can also hear the sound of the clock every time they press the key and the chess pieces against the board. This makes the spectator focus on the game, and the music keeps us on our toes. When the music gets softer and weaker, the sound of a clock appears giving the impression that a long time has passed. At the end of the clip, the music stops as the game has done so, and we can hear the boy talking again, but never Beth's voice.

And the fact that she is with Ali (ex drug addict) and he is driving somewhere, with the music makes us think that he is a good "mentor" for her and that he is taking her to the path of recovery. I undoubtedly find the sound to be of utmost importance in this clip because it is the first step towards the magical life of Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe). Since Harry receives a letter from Hogwarts, the fantastic music conveys a sense of magic and flight, representing the wizards’ world. This receives the name Hedwig’s theme because of Harry’s magical pet, the snowy owl. It anticipates Harry Potter’s entrance on Hogwarts, the wizarding school. This magical music intertwines with the hoots of the owls when thousands of letters enter his home to get Harry to start his first year as a wizard.

The theme sounding is the own character theme (Rey’s Theme), but with some changes, she has gone to many changes since her first appearence, because of that reason, her theme has change too. All along scene, the music is very calmed; just like how she feels in Skywalker’s house. Next, in the detailed shot of the lightsabers being buried with the music loudest than ever, conveying that she is doing a burial for her both masters to honour them. Afterwards, there is a little conversation, an old woman is asking who she is, without music. Then Force Ghosts of her masters appear.

I am Alba Fleta.

I am going to analyse the effect of sound and music on Peter Pan (P.J. Hogan, 2003).

At the beginning of the clip, Peter (Jeremy Sumpter) is shown in an extreme close-up to highlight his resignation, he is willing to die. This is emphasized by the muffled sound which is only broken when Wendy (Rachel Hurd-Wood), shouts and frees herself from the pirate. This allows the spectator to listen properly again as Wendy declares her feelings for Peter. Then, Wendy kisses him and the music rises. Along that, the camera shows different close-ups of the characters reactions. They all look shocked. Suddenly the music changes as Tinkerbell appears and Peter becomes gradually pink symbolising that magic and hope are coming back to him. This is highlighted, once again, by the extreme close-up of Peter’s face showing his growing smile. He is no longer resigned to die, he is free. The mystical sound accentuates the effect that Wendy has on Peter which is also emphasized by Peter’s shout. Thanks to the true love kiss, he can free himself from the pirates and defeat them.

In conclusion, music and sound effects, along with the extreme close-ups of the characters are used in this clip from Peter Pan to highlight the power that magic and true love have on Peter.

I am Marta Hernández and I am going to analyse the importance of sound in Jumanji (Joe Johnston, 1995).
During the film, the sound of the drums plays an important role, as it is the connection between the children and the game. It is not from a particular scene, but from the whole of the film, specially at the beggining, that the children can hear the sound of drums that the adulst can't. As said, its importance is to attract both the children and we watching the film to it, as if it were inevitable to approach to it. As the children get closer to the game, the sound of the drums is higher, and once they are already playing it stops.

I am Laura Camarero. The clip lasts 4:44mins and there is no dialogue. We only hear the ominous music, as in most of the movie. This is because it represents the superficial and cold world of modelling. A world where words do not matter, only the physical appearance is relevant. That is why the director wants us to focus on sound and visual aesthetics. From 1:47 to 2:18mins we see that Jesse is exposed on the runway as the new muse. From this moment on, she can no longer escape that world because all eyes are laid on her beauty and the whole fashion industry is obsessed with her. The music that accompanies this scene also sounds in the final scene of the movie in which we see one of Jesse’s killers. Therefore, it represents the change of lifestyle that Jesse experiences, which will be the cause of her fateful end.

I am Alejandro Hernández. In this clip the use of sound is a complete excellence. The music in the first part of the clip shows the agony that Proteus (sentenced to death) and the people from Syracuse are living, then Simbad appears and the music suggests us a moment of hope, as the tragedy has been stopped, but again, as Simbad offers himself to be executed instead of his friend Proteus, the music turns tense, he is saved by Eris, the cause of all that problem, the thief of the Book of Peace. She induces fear, helped with the music, increases the feeling, it also denotes the presence of a powerful being. Finally, when Simbad recovers the Book and opens it the music conveys us the restored hope to the people of Syracuse, the Book is, again, on the city, where it belongs.

At the beginning the only sound we can hear is an audio of an officer explaining the rules they have to follow as well as the footsteps of all the refugees. Then when a little girl focuses her sight in Katniss and they both (Katniss and Gale) turn around to escape from the officers it starts a music that creates tension as they are going to be discovered. But this music is overshadow by an explosion that saves Katniss and breaks all the tension.

Im Eva Gracia. This clip is from the film Halloween by John Carpenter in 1978. Here we can see how the music makes the spectator feel tense and nervous as it is clear that something bad is going to take place. The music, which is made by high and piercing sounds, lasts during a long take, this makes the spectator tense and also to expect that the character might kill somebody. As a whole, the music may anticipate that the kid, Michael, is going to commit murder.

It's Fátima. In this movie clip the most important sound is not the music, but instead it is the sound of the teaspoon hitting the cup. The protagonist, Chris is being hypnotized by his mother-in-law to fulfill her plan of turning him into a slave. Her hypnotizing tool is the teaspoon. Later on he will be sank into an imaginary black hole, and in this scene the music (that before was very subtle) gains more prominence as the teaspoon sound stops. It reinforces the feeling of uncertainty that the imagery is already showcasing.

Film sound plays an important role in this scene, the song that is heard (Redbone - Come and get your love) is used as part of the intro of the movie but also to introduce us to the character of Star-Lord (Chris Pratt). The music that he is hearing is the same that a mother gave to her son as a gift before her dead (as we can see in the first scenes of the movie), so we understand that he is that kid. Now he is in another planet and he listens to this music to remember the earth and his family, and to feel close to them.

My name is María Carmona and I have chosen this scene from the movie series "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe". Film sound is relevant in this clip because it introduces the battle between Narnia's army and The Witch's (Tilda Swinton), right after Peter Pevensive (William Moseley) assumes his role as the army leader due to Aslan's (voiced by Liam Neeson) death. The sound in which the Narnia's army is presented as an empowered and brave batallion changes dramatically as the opponents appear on screen, seeing as a threating army whose aim is none but to kill Aslan's followers, especially the Kings and Queens of Narnia.

After many years of friendship, both are in love with each other, but they do not take the chance to say it out loud so they do not ruin their bond. At that moment, she is declaring that she will always be there by his side no matter what and in some way she is confessing her feelings for him in front of everyone. The situation becomes awkward as the speech gets too much emotional; this discomfort that everybody is feeling is emphasized through the lack of music in the background. Rosie is the only one filling the silence with her words which have no sense for the rest of the people in the wedding except for his best friend Alex (Sam Claflin). At the end of the clip, the music starts to sound and everyone keeps on with the celebration so they can end this weird moment.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013), Francis Lawrence. (Comment by Paula Berenguer)

I am Paula Berenguer and I am going to comment a clip from The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013). I think that here sound plays an extremely important role, due to the fact that it emphasizes the feeling of tension in Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence).
To begin with, in the first scene we can distinguish the calm before the storm. When the capsule is locked, the noise it produces gives an atmosphere of isolation and it is similar to a jail. Then, a door is suddenly opened offscreen and we know it thanks to sound, her friend is hit quite tough by some guards. The moment we hear this fight and her reaction screaming leads to the beginning of all this tension. The noise of her breath when she reappears in the next scene and the music increase this feeling. Furthermore, I would like to bring focus to the fact that the cannon fire when someone dies is undoubtedly relevant. Her desperation is clearly shown when his mate, Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) and another contestant are fighting to death and they suddenly go underwater. There is an eerie calm until the gunshot is heard. The sense of not knowing who has died produces a feeling of madness in Katniss.

I am going to talk about the importance of sound in this clip from The Sting.

When Henry (Paul Newman) gets closer to Lonnegan (Robert Shaw), the sound of people talking diminishes and ends; and when he is going to talk, the voice of the race commentator stops too. With this, two things are emphasized in the characters´ conversation: the tension of the situation and how important is this moment for the course of the film (the money Lonnegan is going to bet is actually the money the protagonists are going to steal). When they stop speaking, we can hear the people around talking again, and also the race commentator.

Then, Kid Twist (Harold Gould) enters the scene and talks with Lonnegan. Here, we can still listen to the rest of the sounds. This is because we need to hear how the race is going while we see Lonnegan realizing he is going to lose the money he bet.

I am going to analyse the importance of sound in this clip from the horror/thriller film Psycho .
In the clip, we can identify three different types of sound.

Firstly ,while Marion is running away both Marion and the spectator can hear voices. In this case, the voices belong to her employer and her colleague and we are able to hear their conversation without seeing them (offscreen sound). The effects of sound here could express Marion concern about what people is going to think about her and also, this may create an effect that suggests her internal struggle: doing what it is necessary in order to get marry to Sam or doing what is considered morally correct and getting the money back .

Secondly, when we stop hearing the voices and she begins to have difficulties with driving, we get to hear a strong and accelerated music whose aim could be to create suspense and tension. In fact, there are moments in which the spectator may think she is going to have a road accident.

Thirdky, when she finally finds lodging , that is, when she sees the motel, the music stops, and the only thing we get to hear is the sound of the rain. In this case, sound could express suspense but in a different way. The fact that we just listen ti the rain and the darkness of the place could emphasise the hostility of the place and in a way, anticipate that something awful is going to take place there.

I am Ángela Gil and I am going to comment on one of the last scenes of this film. I have chosen this scene because I think the sound implicated is quite relevant. At the beginning, we see Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) talking to his family and friends for the last time. He looks very calm and so is the music, representing that he is prepared to accept his fate. The music makes the scene quite emotional for us, empathizing with the character.
Then, we observe Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes) waiting for him and when he thinks Harry is not going to show up, he does. In that moment, the music becomes stronger suggesting tension about the confrontation between both characters. When Harry stops suddenly, the music stops at the same time to listen to the words of his enemy. After the speech, a high-pitched music starts and becomes louder creating tension and when Harry closes his eyes, the music stops with a second of absolute silence representing he is prepared to sacrifice. At the end, Voldemort shouts the spell.

As US helicopters march on a village to prepare their attack, they play Ride of the Valkyries through speakers in order to motivate the troops.

I'm María Asensio and I am going to talk about the importance of sound in this scene of Game of Thrones.

Cercei is about to be judged and her preparation for the judge is introduced by a sad and slow melody played by a piano. Game of Thrones is not a series with many sad piano songs, so that is what makes us realise something is wrong. The piano keeps going while everyone is waiting for Cercei to go to the trial so Loras can be free.

There is a conversation between Pycelle and Qyburn where music increases on rhythm and intensity, and we hear for the first time a voice in the theme. This kids voice kind of spoils us the death of Pycelle because he was a pedophile and kids are getting their revenge. There is a higher increase in the music while we get to know about the valyrian fire introducing us that something big is about to happen, which makes us feel anxious and wanting to know what is happening.

Margery Tyrell tries to escape from the sept while Lancel tries to put out the fire, there is again an increase of the music and we already know what is about to happen but we don't want it to happen. And when we are at the edge of our seats, the music stops and the valyrian fire is lit.

The music in this sequence introduces us in what is happening, with the ups and downs of the music makes us feel anxious and expecting something to happen.

I'm Inés Calmaestra and I'm going to talk about the sound in the Joker movie. I have chosen this scene specifically because I think this is a great example of using the sound to understand what is going on in the character’s mind. Here, we can tell that Arthur Fleck – the Joker – (Joaquin Phoenix) is getting more upset as he keeps talking with Murray Franklin (Robert De Niro). This discussion reaches one point where some music starts playing. This music sounds like snaps that quickly are getting louder. With this sound we start feeling some kind of anxiety because we can sense that something is about to happen. But it also shows us what Arthur is feeling. As we know at this point of the movie, Arthur suffers of bipolar disorder, so with the increasing of this sound we could expect that he is about to snap at any moment. And that’s exactly what happens when he pulls out a gun and shoot Murray.

I'm Patricia Cardiel and I am going to analyse the effect of the sound in this movie more specifically , I would like to share this scene from the movie Suicide Squad , in which sound or in this case music helps to create and enviroment and clarifies some things about the movie . In the beggining , we can see the whole squad arriving at the airport with the militars , the song is Seven Nation Army which is perfect for that momet because it creates an envioroment of milItary service , they think they gonna serve them but they are only trying to escape from their prisions . (With the same clothes without doing anything fun according to them ). Later in the scene they start getting all of their things and the song is without me from Eminen which clarifies perfectly all of their personalities and the fact that they do what they want without worring about anything else . In this film sound is really important because helps the viewers to understand the feelings of the characters and feel identified with one or another .
The music is very varied and we can go from this scene in the airport into the scene in which the joker converts the doctor into Harley Queen , the music is so much relax and even romantic and also misterious to create that enviroment because although he doesn't admit it , he really loves Harley Queen .
