Fighting in the Civil War lasted for 4 years from 1861-1865 and more Americans died in this conflict (620,000) - more than any other conflict the U.S. has engaged in. Abraham Lincoln was President of the United States during this time period and was assassinated just after the end of the war on April 14, 1865. Students are to be introduced to the Reconstruction period, or the period of time after the war where the U.S. government was reestablished. Chief Justice Roger Taney, in an 1857 plurality opinion, said that African-Americans could never become United States citizens and that the Missouri Compromise was unconstitutional.
