What connections do you draw between the message in this TED talk and your own life?

This relates to me because last year I was online I couldn't show more of my self. I didn't understand my friends a lot but when I came in person I knew more about their reality. I have seen stimulation also. This year I began to use discord. I noticed people making chats and trying various ways to make it active. A good example of validation I saw was that constantly people check on discord. Control was when bunch of people make lots of chats for fun.

How has your thinking changed after watching this talk? Was it the speaker’s use of logic and facts or an appeal to emotions that caused you to want to make a change in your actions, thoughts, or behavior?

An appeal to emotions and behaviors has changed my thinking. When I was online I felt like most of my characters couldn't be shown. It was difficult to understand other people. It mostly felt tiring and lonely after chatting with friends online.

What connections do you draw between the message in this TED talk and your own life?

I can relate to this because when people see me in a video/phone call for the first time, they usually think I'm a boring person and an introvert. They don't know that I can be a fun person. I usually need to get comfortable with someone and know them in person to show my personality a little bit more. Even on discord, the people I know only on discord see me as a completely different person compared to the people I know in real life. I see stimulation everywhere. People trying to make their discord servers active, people trying to get famous on social media platforms, and people promoting their channels are all examples of stimulation. I've also seen validation when people wouldn't stop checking their notifications for new youtube videos, text messages, and posts. Even in class, I always see some people on discord or playing a game. Lastly, control was when people would make many channels on discord and on youtube.

Question: What connections do you draw between the message in this TED talk and your own life?

One connection I draw from the TED talk and my own life is that I find myself checking my discord notifications after school often and I have noticed that other people do this too. This is one way that there is stimulation in my life. Another way I see stimulation is that I see people playing video games such as Minecraft together quite often.

Another way i related to the TED talk is that I couldn't show who I really was that much when I was in online school last year. Being in person just causes me to naturally act the way I am and express myself more freely.

I've seen control as people making their own discord servers and people creating youtube channels to post content.

What connections do you draw between the message in this TED talk and your own life?

A lot of the time when I am spending time with family we can have small disputes. These can be small arguments. For example, whether a word is real, a historical fact, or rules for a board game. This can cause us to take out our phones and check the facts to see who is right. This causes disruption and sometimes after coming on the phone we don’t get off. I also spend a lot of time on my screens because of school. Sometimes I normally spend my whole day on Google Classroom and my phone which causes me to miss out on some family time which makes me feel lonely. I also see people constantly on their phones criticizing how many views and likes they have compared to their friends. And they feel really disappointed when they have fewer and superior when they have more. I am constantly on my phone to keep my mind stimulated. Whether scrolling through the news or Youtube. I am constantly needing something to scroll through to keep my brain stimulated.

What connections do you draw between the message in this TED talk and your own life?

In the TED talk the person talks about how he can’t stand idle when he is eaiting. i can relate to that. While he was outside, waiting to cross, I was once at home without internet for 3 whole days and barely made it through. I could not find something to do and all I could think to do was sit down and stare at a wall or walk around the house over and over and worst of all I would look on my phone for something to do without internet.

Another thing is that I watched a video once and then all of a sudden a bunch pf videos from that person started to fill up my recommendations. While I did like the video, I still like other things, and want to watch and learn about new things.

In the TED talk they talked about how texting was not the same as offline connections. I can relate to this because when I had just finished grade 5 me and my friends talked to each other through texting. For a couple of months, it worked out well and we conversated regularly. However, after I got new friends I started to stop talking to my old friends online. I think, the fact that I can only talk to my old friends had an effect since I see my new friends everyday so I can’t really forget to talk to them. Slowly my old friends and I drifted apart and when we started talking again they were small conversations such as:

“Hi”

“Hi”

“How are you?”

“Good, and you?”

“Good”

Then the conversation would just end and we wouldnt speak for another few months.

That is my answer to how my life relates ro the TED talk.

I feel like I have to change myself based on what people online are showing. It’s showing how we don’t have to be shaped by media, and how its more important and easier to spend time with real life friends. I liked Maya Angelou’s quote, “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will always remember how you made them feel.” I think that this is more profound of a quote than ever because now, online, people feel it’s easier to say something bad online, so there has been an increase of bullying. We have to talk more in person because then it will be less easy to insult someone. Not really, since I’ve always been aware of how being online can change behavior. For others, this might make them them think about how it doesn’t matter what people say online, because being online is like removing a filter from people. People are more prone to say things they wouldn’t normally say.

What connections do you draw between the message in this TED talk and your own life?

In the TED talk, the speaker talks a lot about how people should meet more in person and spend time talking about topics that interest them. I think that after the pandemic started, I started to talk less with others whether in person or online. I also stopped communicating with others that I used to talk with for fun because I was online. I also spend a lot more time on Google Classroom instead of talking and spending time with family.
I think that taking time to talk in person is better than online chatting because it is more fun. Iit is harder to do but it also is better to interact with others. I think that because of not speaking to others much I have also lost a lot of confidence when speaking.

It was easy to change the way I talked and acted online, Emojis and Expressions likes "LMAO or BAHAHAHAAHHA" that I used online dont work in person and I find myself being extremely akward not knowing how to react. I lost a lot of social skills from the pandemic and that made my life a whole lot harder when making friends. I also do find myself seeking validation from people online when I post something Instagram and I always look forward to seeing a red notification.
In my opinion is it better to talk in person, even though its harder than online it makes me feel more connected and comfortable when I can see the other person's facial expressions and body language and others can see my expressions and body language which brings us closer.

The TED talk is about how you can build better relationships by staying offline. It like we have a whole different life online that we make ourselves think we have to stay updated on. The speaker talks about the craving for clout, influence of others, wanting others' approval, and not socially interacting as much. I think I do relate to this TED talk, and nowadays I'm sure many other people can too. I believe staying online everyday for hours is impacting me negatively in ways such as less social interaction, feeling insecure about not meeting certain standards, and much more. For example, I used to make all kinds of art works, but after I got exposed to other peoples' art on the internet, I started drawing only what other people would like, or whatever was more popular. I also started to be less confident about my art, and lacking motivation.
Something else that I was really confused about near the start of this school year was how much I was used to talking online during the summer vacation, and not having any real life social interactions. I found my self saying "lol" when talking to people in person, which really doesn't make sense because lol is just an abbreviation for laugh out loud, and it makes sense to say it online. It had become a habit, and it took a while to get over it.
Talking in person is beneficial in many ways. I don't think people should completely stop being offline either, the internet can be used for education, knowledge, and reaching out to friends farther away. Another advantage to talking in person would be that you can see the person, they're expressions, the body language, etc. these things also help in understanding a conversation and clearing any confusion. It can also decrease how often people are rude to others, because online you can';t see the other person's expressions and might not realize you're doing something wrong as much. When you're behind a screen, you also feel like you're not responsible for the actions you take as much. The speakers emotions and reasoning has inspired me to make spending less time online as one of my major goals for this year, and I look forward to achieving it.
