In our last discussion, I referenced the article “Convincing the Naysayer,” by Robin Moehler, but I’d like to discuss it more here since it’s part of the Module 5 content. The article brought up points about graphic novels that I never realized before. She discussed that students use text and images to create and process ideas and information as they text, message, and send photos. These work together to create meaning like graphic novels: graphics + words = meaning. So reading graphic novels supports the way students today are communicating. Did you learn anything new about graphic novels as a result of the content in Module 5?

Fantasy books are among some of my favorite books. I am a huge Harry Potter fan and I cannot wait to visit the theme park and get to emerge myself into the books in real life. Fantasy books are very popular with young adults. What are some of your favorite fantasy books? Are these books that young adults should read?

Word in Context (Children’s Literature in Action, Page 236, Paragraph 1):
“They [characters] should be the credible and multidimensional individuals and grow a bit in the course of the story. For example, Harry Potter may be your basic good guy, but he has his foibles too.”

Definition:
Multidimensional – Containing many different aspects or qualities; in literature, it refers to characters who are complex and realistic, showing both strengths and weaknesses.
Multidimensional characters feel real. They don’t fit into simple “good guy” or “bad guy” categories—they’re layered, flawed, and capable of growth. When we see characters struggle, make mistakes, and evolve, it gives readers a chance to reflect on their own complexities too. That’s what makes characters like Harry Potter or Katniss Everdeen stick with us—they’re not perfect, and that’s exactly why they matter.

A final section of Brock’s Young Adult Fiction in Action suggests “pairing informational books with fiction.” My daughter has been asking about the life of Louisa May Alcott as a result of watching the play Little Women, so I’ve been looking for a biography. Turns out, Invincible Louisa: The Story of the Author of Little Women was mentioned in our textbook as the first biography to win a Newberry Medal. What are some other informational books we could pair with fiction to encourage students to read different genres? This is another passive programming idea!
