The word fraction comes from the Latin word fractio, which means to break.
Fractions were not considered numbers in the past but instead a way of comparing whole numbers with each other.
Egyptians were writing fractions as early as 1800 BC. Since their number system was a base 10 idea, they had their own symbols for 1, 10, 100, 10000, 100000, and 1000000, (Pumfrey. 2011).

FUTURE IMPACT:
Fractions are important to your everyday life because you will consider fractions when sharing your box of donuts, dividing your chocolate bar, or sharing a pizza with others. They can also help you to understand the nature of numbers, which provides a foundation for learning algebra. Fractions play a huge role in measuring and cooking (following a recipe), construction, and dividing money.
