Artist: Ted Snyder
Type of Song: Jazz
Context: The song is played in the car while traveling through Central Park. The sun has just set behind the apartment buildings and night is approaching as the song begins playing.
Significant Lyrics: "The stars that shine above, Will light our way to love. You'll rule this land with me"
Rationale: The author uses the song to show the love between Gatsby and Daisy. Although not dating, Gatsby continues to pursue Daisy and hopes to get a second chance with her.

Artist: Robert Cameron Rogers
Type of Song: Religious
Context: Gatsby takes Nick to meet Meyer Wolfsheim, but the secretary states that he is in Chicago. Both men know this to be untrue due to the whistling of the song from behind the door.
Significant Lyrics: "The hours I spent with thee, dear heart
Are as a string of pearls to me;
I count them over ev'ry one apart"
Rationale: Meyer Wolfsheim is known to be the man who stacked the 1919 World Series and the man who illegally bootlegged alcohol. The song he whistles is a part of a larger Catholic prayer, possibly showing Wolfsheim wants forgiveness for his actions.

Artist: Louis Hirsch
Type of Song: Classical
Context: Gatsby and Daisy go downstairs to the music room where Jay lights Daisy a cigarette and sit on the coach. Once seated, Klipspringer starts playing the song on the piano.
Significant Lyrics: "Best of all, room. Dream room for two.
Better than a palace with a gilded dome, is a love nest you can call home"
"Many builders there have been since the world began,
Palace, cottage, mansion, inn they have built for man"
Rationale: Fitzgerald uses the song because it represents the idea of characters and their environments. In the novel, the homes of the people show their money and their power. Different characters have different homes, which also helps provide insight on the character's status.

Artist: Ed Sheeran
Type of Song: Pop
Significant Lyrics: "When you said you looked a mess, I whispered underneath my breath
But you heard it, darling, you look perfect tonight"
Rationale: This song, similar to "The Rosary" speaks on the idea of how much the girl matters to the man. A string of pearls is a prized possession, and the woman is everything to the man in "Perfect." This song continues a mood of deep love and admiration for a fellow lover.

Artist: OneRepublic
Type of Song: Pop
Significant Lyrics: "Ooh, broke as a bottle of wine. 'Cause if we don't find money then what we got honey lifts it up, we got some rich love"
Rationale: The song communicates the message of regardless of the materialistic items someone is surrounded by, love always prevails.

The Jazz Age was a time in US history of much change, both good and bad. F. Scott Fitzgerald writes The Great Gatsby to show the affects of the Roaring Twenties on all walks of life. The use of music throughout the novel helps connect the most influential musical age to the people living in it.
