The student may not understand the way the teacher explains the problem and may have learned it another way in the past. Both ways lead to the correct answer, but the student still feels as though they have to follow the teacher's directions in order for their answer to be correct. I have had this problem in school before, and I find it very frustrating. There is more often than not more than one way to look at any problem. Assignments and projects can't always be cookie cutter copies of one another from each student. That just promotes plagiarism and copying. They have to add their own personal flair to their projects.
