Bands like R.E.M. and Nirvana we're big alternative bands and we're the ones that really started bringing out the alternative genre. (they're also really good bands so you should check them out.) the genre emerged from mainly punk rock but then later punk rock started being classified as an alternative sub-genre. in my opinion that still is its own genre because of how big it is but you can believe what you want.

Some popular emo bands are fall out boy, twenty one pilots, my chemical romance, panic! At the disco, weezer, blink-182, paramore, and the all american rejects. you probably have heard of at least one of these and dint even think they were considered alternative. things like twenty one pilots. you probably thought that was rap. well in a way it is. but it fits in multiple different sub-genres. things like alternative rap, emo, alternative dance, and elctro-pop.
