Let's dive in the Victorian period's atmos-fear
The Victorian period was marked by the Industrial revolution in England during the XIX th, which lead to a facination for death and occult sciences because of all those new inventions. The Victorian era was shared between religion, a main aspect of their lives, and science , which questioned faith. Every scientific and technological advance encouraged a kind of a magical thinking and was accompanied by a shadow discourse of the occult. Thereby , things like " pea-soupers" , thick fog in london caused by the River Thames and factories smoke , increased that feeling. It created a creepy atmosphere , and due to this foggy environnement , Jack the Ripper's acts were made possible. Otherwise, since Victorians didn't have a lot of means to be entertained , gothic litterature had an enormous impact on English readers in their , day to day lives. Indeed , by reading novels like Dracula , people started believing and fearing that their dead beloved ones could come back from the dead as vampires. That is why some graves where turned upside down.
So far, we have found that the Victorian period was the Golden age of belief in supernatural forces and energies, ghost stories, weird transmissions and spooky phenomena. For a long time, historians have ignored these beliefs as errors or eccentrities. They have believed that these fascinations were signs of the perturbations produced by the speed of the cultural change.

What are the misteries which hunted the Victorians nightmares ? Will they ever be resolved, or will they remain and torment our minds ? Find it out in our magazine !

During Victorian period, supernatural became popular and many people liked it. This period give a name of this type of mysteries. So at this moment the mysteries that was in the Victorian stories called « Victorian mysteries ».

It was so popular, people invented stories and make false legend to make please thr people. So we have a lot of example of Victorian mysteries.

Gothic stories also were a topic of interest, with books like Dracula by Bram Stoker or Dr.Jekyll and M.Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson. The gothic genre may be the reason why so many stories looks so unreal, they were influenced by them and might have created the stories themselves. But, some exists with undeniable proof, like the Mary Celeste, a ghost ship. It’s crew disappeared never to be seen again. There also is the case of Jack the ripper, it was someone that killed prostitutes by rippîg their guts out, he was never caught by the police.

Even if we have a lot of mysteries, some are false because there is no proof existing , there are more like urban legends than mysterics. So we have two theories ; the first theory is that the supernatural exists and this is why there are mysteries are cannot be explained. And the second theory is that we have mysteries with logical and physical explication but we still don't have enough proof to undersand it's real.
