5 Targeted Outcomes

1: ACTIVE 60
To advocate and position the delivery of the CMO daily active minutes for all young people, as a universal offer to maintain and grow school engagement.

Helping schools prioritise the delivery of the Chief Medical Officer’s recommended 60 active minutes a day, or 20 minutes a day for SEND students. Supporting improvements in student’s physical literacy, and social, emotional and physical wellbeing.

2: INCLUSION
To ensure all competition has a clear intent and creates positive experiences based on the motivation, competence and confidence of the young people that need our support the most.

Using local insight to target young people who would receive the greatest benefit from involvement in competitions. This includes students from low socio-economic backgrounds, minority ethnic groups, SEND students and girls.

3: TRANSITION
To have a clear focus on secondary school engagement and transition points.

Prioritising delivery in secondary schools whilst also recognising the impact on students transitioning in early Key Stage 2 and from Key Stage 2 to 3.

4: LEADERSHIP
To support the personal development of targeted young people through youth engagement and leadership.

This includes opportunities across the full breadth of the School Games which incorporates physical activity, competition, high quality leadership and youth engagement.

5: STAKEHOLDERS
To advocate and engage key stakeholders on the value of School Games to support local provision and improve the experience for young people and their families.

Showing the role the School Games can play in making a meaningful difference to the lives of young people. Encouraging engagement from local stakeholders including senior leadership teams, Public Health and parents.

Get Active: a strategy for the future of sport and physical activity

Children and young people are an area of focus within the strategy, and Government has committed to evaluating their strategic investment and programmes to ensure that sport is available to all pupils – both within and outside of the school day. The strategy introduces an ambition that all children should meet the Chief Medical Officers’ guidelines on physical activity, with a target of getting 1 million more active children by 2030.

Facts and Figures:

Over a quarter of adults in England are classed as inactive, doing an average of less than 5 minutes of activity a day
Children should take part in sport and physical activity for an average of 60 minutes or more every day.
Disabled children should undertake an average of 20 minutes every day.

Activity levels - children and young people

Data from the Active Lives Children and Young People survey (2021-2022).

Less active: 30.1%

2.2 million children (30.1%) are less active, doing less than an average of 30 minutes a day

Fairly active: 22.7%

1.7 million children (22.7%) are fairly active, doing an average of 30–59 minutes a day

Active: 47.2%

3.4 million children (47.2%) are active, doing an average of 60 minutes or more a day

Government Ambition
To see activity rates increase across the whole population, and likewise to see inactivity rates decrease. This is an ambition that the whole government and the sport and physical activity sector should share.

At a national level, this means that by 2030 the government want to see:

over 2.5 million more active adults, as defined by the Chief Medical Officers’ guidelines on physical activity
over 1 million more children meeting the Chief Medical Officers’ guidelines on physical activity
activity rates increasing and inactivity levels decreasing in all parts of the country
