Panama was under the Spanish Empire from years 1513-1821. Panama is now an independent nation. Spain influenced Panama by bringing over dance and the national dress of Panama, "the Pollera" is heavily influenced by Spain. As is the gold jewelry worn with the dress. Panama also inherited the tradition of large festivals.
