The graphic changes from the Japanese Americans behind the fence of the internment camp, to another depiction of them behind the fence, but with the Japanese Empire flag behind them, painting them as "loyal citizens" to the emperor of Japan.

The shift in the panels goes from seeing symbolic American topics such as war gravestones, the American flag and FDR's speech. The split between scenes is to create more attention to each American moment to symbolize what pledging their loyalty to America would mean. By dragging out this moment, it adds a dramatic touch to the scene and it creates importance for George's parent's answers.

When they shift back to moment-to-moment, big things are in fact still happening but it's a moment of choice. The moments shown, where George's parents selected "no-no" were incredibly difficult and continued to affect them for the next few years.

The shift signifies how impactful of a moment this was for George's parents and the future of their family. When big (and usually scary) moments happen, they seem to happen in slow motion. Having each and every moment in this scene highlighted demonstrates that feeling, and tells the reader that this is an important decision to pay attention to.

This is significant because it allows us to see that sometimes the small moments or details are the most significant. The scene to scene allows us to see longer moments. This allows readers to see how impactful specific scenes are. One of the last scenes on page 115, allows us to see how petrified George's parents are after answering two no's on the alliance survey.
