The British Government was still in large debt; so, A man named Charles Townshend proposed new taxes on everyday items for the colonies. These taxed imports on items like glass, team and paper. But, it also allowed any official to search property for smuggled goods without a warrant. Due to the effort of colonists like James Otis, John Dickerson, and Samuel Adams, it enthused people to fight against these taxes. So, people boycotted these goods and petitioned the British for its repeal. Due to this, the new prime minister, Lord North got these taxes repealed and brought the colonies to a period of relatively economic and political prosperity.
