Second step seems to be a good way to build community and bring a focus to many advisory lessons. The topics seem relevant. Let's make sure to keep the extra "fun stuff" too (house activities, DEAR, advisor choice).

It's fine, but can be a bit dry. We're talking in our grade level how we can integrate more hands-on experiences that show some of the topics Second Step discusses (i.e. actually practicing juggling when the video uses juggling to demonstrate how our brains learn new skills).

I think that the program is great, but it is certainly a change from what our students are used to with Advisory. Contrary to the video, my kids do not see these lessons as "fun." They wants games and activities. The SS calendar is packed with lessons, and there is less time for students to meet as a grade level group or to just have an Advisors Choice time. I think it would be beneficial to build some of those times into the calendar.

The makeup of my Advisory kids has not led to a lot of discussion at this point. The students know that the Advisory class is a safe space, but their personality is not one to share openly. It will take some time to build in those interactions.

Still Early Days....

As we've really only gotten into two Second Step lessons, it still feels like early days to draw any hard conclusions. The trends seem to be that the heart of the lessons and extensions are good, but the delivery can be a bit repetitive or dry, so our 6th grade advisory has been discussing how to hold the heart of the lesson while spicing up the delivery a bit and having some flexibility in how we get kids to converse about the topics and engage in activities. I think SS is set up assuming that teachers need a really scripted lesson and don't have any of their own tricks up their sleeves, but we do have our own ideas and ideas for instruction, so we're figuring out how to include these to enrich lessons.

A positive change into advisory program but packed

I really like the idea of having a set program as I believe as MS team, all of us are diverse, in culture, values, etc so having a base program that helps to guide teachers to have same language with in MS is a positive step. I find positive the idea of vertical articulation from grade 6 to 8.
Also, I believe that there are experts out there that surely understands and study in deep the emotional processes of MS students. So, we teachesr can do better job by "using" this expert knowledge to do better our advisory lesson.
Having said this, I think the calendar is packed and we should think on having at least twice a month advisory session where grade level advisory get together for whole grade 7 activities.

I like the idea of having a plan for us to all follow as a grade-level and to have the topics build from 6th - 8th grade. I would like flexibility though in how to present to my students and I don't want to lose whole grade time, opportunities for DEAR and advisor's choice.

I agree with the comments concerning the schedule of lessons. Advisory is certainly a time to incorporate SEL lessons, but it is also a time to slow down and really get to know each other. I'd like to see fewer lesson days and more chill and chat time. I am also having a difficult time with the flow of themes. It seems to jump around too much for my liking. There was a great lesson/activity on what's best about a person and personal strengths, but then it immediately switched to identity. So much follow up could have been done with personal strengths if the calendar wasn't as packed. With that said, I certainly appreciate the time and effort put in by the committee to ensure consistency throughout the advisory program.
