"HE WHO CREATED DEATH AND LIFE TO TEST YOU . [AS TO] WHICH OF YOU IS BEST IN DEED , AND HE IS THE EXALTED IN MIGHT, THE FORGIVING.

The Hadith of Jibril

This significant hadith is often called the "Mother of the Sunnah" because it provides a comprehensive overview of the three dimensions of the religion.

1. Islam (Submission)

Definition: Islam is defined by the Five Pillars of Islam.

Components:

Shahadah (Testimony of Faith): Declaring that there is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is His Messenger.

Salat (Prayer): Establishing the five daily prayers.

Zakat (Charity): Paying the obligatory alms.

Sawm Ramadan (Fasting): Fasting during the month of Ramadan.

Hajj (Pilgrimage): Performing the pilgrimage to Mecca if one is able.

2. Iman (Faith)

Definition: Iman is the belief in the unseen and the six articles of faith.

Components:

Belief in Allah.

Belief in His angels.

Belief in His books.

Belief in His messengers.

Belief in the Last Day.

Belief in divine decree (Qadar), both the good and the evil aspects.

3. Ihsan (Spiritual Excellence)

Definition: Ihsan is the highest level of faith, characterized by a profound inner connection and consciousness of Allah.

Description: To worship Allah as though you see Him, and if you cannot see Him, then know that He sees you.

1. Belief in Allah (Iman billāh) 🤲

Believe Allah is One, has no partners, no children, no equal.

He is the Creator, Sustainer, and the only One worthy of worship.

2. Belief in Angels (Iman bil-Malāʾikah) 👼

Angels are created from light.

They never disobey Allah.

Examples: Jibrīl (revelation), Mikāʾīl (rain & provision), Isrāfīl (blows trumpet), ʿIzrāʾīl (angel of death).

3. Belief in Books (Iman bil-Kutub) 📖

Allah revealed divine books as guidance.

Main ones:

Tawrāt (Torah) to Musa (Moses)

Zabūr (Psalms) to Dawud (David)

Injīl (Gospel) to ʿĪsa (Jesus)

Qur’an to Muhammad ﷺ (final & preserved).

4. Belief in Messengers (Iman bir-Rusul) 👳‍♂️

Allah sent prophets to guide mankind.

25 are mentioned in Qur’an (e.g., Adam, Nuh, Ibrahim, Musa, Isa, Muhammad ﷺ).

Muhammad ﷺ is the final messenger (Khatam an-Nabiyyīn).

5. Belief in the Day of Judgment (Iman bil-Yawm al-Ākhir) ⚖️

Life is temporary; after death comes resurrection.

Everyone will be judged for deeds.

Rewards: Jannah 🌸 | Punishment: Jahannam 🔥.

6. Belief in Divine Decree (Qada’ & Qadar) ✨

Allah’s knowledge & will cover everything.

Whatever happens (good or bad) is by Allah’s decree.

Humans still have free will within Allah’s plan.

📌 Summary:

Believing in Allah, Angels, Books, Messengers, the Day of Judgment, and Qada’ & Qadar is the foundation of faith. A Muslim must believe in all six completely to be a true believer.

Usrah Week 3

Pillars Of Iman:

Belief in Allah (Tawḥīd):

This is the belief in the oneness of God, Allah, who is the Creator and Sustainer, has no partners, and deserves worship alone.

Belief in Angels (Malāʾikah):

Muslims believe in the existence of angels, beings created by Allah to worship Him and carry out His commands.

Belief in the Revealed Books (Kutub):

This pillar involves believing in the divine scriptures revealed by Allah to His messengers, such as the Quran.

Belief in the Messengers (Rusul):

Muslims believe that Allah sent prophets and messengers to convey His message to humanity, including figures like Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and Muhammad.

Belief in the Last Day (Ākhirah):

This is the belief in the Day of Judgment and the resurrection, where all will be held accountable for their actions.

Belief in Divine Decree (Qadar):

This is the belief that Allah has preordained all good and bad that occurs in the universe, according to

His knowledge and wisdom

Ihsan And eschatology

Definition:

Ihsan means to do things with excellence and perfection, to worship Allah with the highest quality of devotion.

The Core Principle:

The Prophet Muhammad described ihsan as "to worship Allah as if you can see Him, for though you cannot see Him yet (know that) He sees you

Connecting Ihsan to Eschatology

Spiritual Preparation:

Ihsan is the foundation of a believer's spiritual preparedness for the end times. A sincere and God-aware individual living with ihsan aligns their actions with the Divine will, which is crucial for the afterlife.

Sincerity and God-Awareness:

Ihsan fosters a deep and constant awareness of Allah's presence, ensuring sincerity in deeds and preventing acts that would be displeasing to God

Belief In Messengers And Prophets

Divine Guidance for All:

Muslims believe God sent messengers and prophets to all people and nations, providing guidance and a living example of how to live a righteous life.

Shared Core Message:

All prophets conveyed the same fundamental message: to worship the One True God (Allah) and follow His guidance.

Respect and Reverence:

Prophets and messengers are highly respected as chosen servants of Allah, serving as exemplary figures of piety and steadfastness.

Infallibility in Conveying the Message:

While human, prophets are considered protected by Allah from error when delivering His divine revelation.

Finality of Prophethood:

Muslims believe Prophet Muhammad is the final messenger, with his message (the Quran) being the ultimate and complete guidance for all of mankind.

Articles of Faith:

Belief in the prophets and messengers is one of the six pillars of faith (Iman) in Islam, emphasizing that people cannot claim ignorance of God's commandments on the Day of Judgment

SURAH MARYAM AYAT 41-45

41. And mention in the Book [the story of] Abraham. Indeed, he was a man of truth and a prophet.

42. When he said to his father, “O my father, why do you worship that which does not hear and does not see and will not benefit you at all?

43. O my father, indeed there has come to me of knowledge that which has not come to you, so follow me; I will guide you to an even path.

44. O my father, do not worship Satan. Indeed, Satan has ever been, to the Most Merciful, disobedient.

45. O my father, indeed I fear that there will touch you a punishment from the Most Merciful so you would be to Satan a companion [in Hel

lfire].”

Usrah Reflection on Adab

From this story, we can extract lessons on adab in advising and interacting:

1. Adab in speech – Ibrahim used the soft phrase “Yā Abatī” (O my dear father) four times, showing gentleness, respect, and love even when disagreeing.

2. Adab in da’wah – He did not insult the idols or his father, but asked guiding questions and gave reasoning.

3. Adab towards elders/parents – Even when correcting, he showed humility (“knowledge has come to me that has not come to you”).

4. Adab in warning – He expressed fear for his father’s safety, not anger or pride.

5. Balance of truth and respect – Ibrahim stood firm on tawḥīd (truth) but maintained manners.

🕌 Usrah Takeaway

When we advise family, friends, or even parents, we must use hikmah (wisdom) and adab.

Speaking the truth is wajib, but the way we say it matters.

Adab turns advice into nasihat penuh kasih sayang, not harsh jud

gment.

HIKMAH IN ISLAM :

الحِكْمَةُ ضَالَّةُ المُؤْمِنِ فَحَيْثُ وَجَدَهَا فَهُوَ أَحَقُّ بِهَا

Hikmah kebijaksanaan merupakan harta yang hilang milik orang mu’min; di mana saja dia dapatinya, maka dialah yang paling berhak ke atasnya.

Jami’ al-Tirmizi (2687)

📌Zakat:

• Purifies and cleanses wealth and the heart

📌Hajj:

• Symbol of total devotion to Allah

• Trains obedience and prepares for the Hereafter

🗝️Salah :

• Obligatory for Muslims who are sane and have reached maturity

• Valid prayer requires purity, covering awrah, correct time, and facing qiblah

• Pillars include intention, standing, recitation, bowing, prostration, and salam

• Prayer is invalidated by actions such as talking, excessive movement, and loss of wudu

🗝️Sunnah in Salah :

• Looking at the place of prostration

• Reciting du‘a iftitah and tasbih

• Maintaining khushu’ throughout the prayer

🗝️Wudu :

• Pillars include intention, washing face, arms, wiping head, washing feet, and order

• Wudu is invalidated by sleep, loss of consciousness, or bodily discharge

• Sunnah acts include basmalah, rinsing mouth and nose, and supplication after wudu

🗝️Tayammum :

• Permitted when water is unavailable or harmful

• Pillars include intention, wiping face and hands with clean earth

🗝️Khushu’ :

• Khushu’ means focus, humility, calmness, and awareness before Allah

• Distracted thoughts and worldly attachments reduce khushu’

• Khushu’ is achieved through proper preparation, understanding the prayer, and minimizing distractions

• ​Heartfelt Connection: Khushu turns prayer from a physical routine into a deep, spiritual conversation with Allah. It requires us to be mentally present, bringing a sense of peace and divine guidance into our lives.

• ​A Shield Against Wrongdoing: Beyond the prayer mat, a focused prayer acts as a natural deterrent against bad habits and sinful behavior, helping us maintain self-control throughout the day.

• ​Character Transformation: Praying with sincerity isn't just a religious duty, it’s a tool for personal growth that refines our manners (akhlaq) and strengthens our faith (iman).

  
  

​Key Values Cultivated in Prayer

​1. Al-Taah (Sincere Obedience)

By responding to the call of prayer with a focused heart, we train ourselves to submit to Allah’s will. This builds a disciplined lifestyle where we are loyal to our principles and consistent in our responsibilities.

​2. Al-Jihad (The Inner Struggle)

Khushu is a form of Jihad al-Nafs (struggling against the self). Fighting off distractions, laziness, and wandering thoughts during prayer builds the mental toughness and willpower needed to stay firm in our worship.

​3. Muhasabah (Mindful Self-Reflection)

Prayer provides a quiet space to evaluate our intentions and actions. This daily "self-check" makes us more aware of our shortcomings and encourages us to constantly seek forgiveness and improvement.

​4. Iffah (Moral Integrity & Modesty)

True prayer nurtures a desire to stay pure. It encourages us to guard our actions and speech, ensuring that the modesty we show in prayer reflects in how we conduct ourselves in public and private.

​5. Tawadu (Genuine Humility)

When we prostrate in sujud, we acknowledge our total reliance on Allah. This physical act of humility helps erase ego and arrogance, teaching us to treat others with kindness and respect.

​Personal Reflection

​The true impact of salah is seen in our daily behavior. When we pray with khushu, we aren't just finishing a task, we are building a stronger Islamic identity that values discipline, humility, and constant self-improvement

1. Meaning of the Ayah on Fasting (Qur’an 2:183)

• Fasting is obligatory for believers, just as it was for people before them.

• It is prescribed to help believers develop Taqwa (God-consciousness).

• Only those with true faith can fully fulfil this command

2. “Those Before You”

• Refers mainly to Jews and Christians.

• Also understood to mean all previous nations.

• Mentioned to:

• Make fasting feel less burdensome

• Encourage Muslims to do better than earlier communities

3. Taqwa (Mindfulness of Allah)

• Comes from the word meaning protection or prevention.

• Means being careful to avoid sins and disobedience.

• Fasting trains self-control and awareness of Allah at all times

4. Fasting Is More Than Hunger

• Fasting is not only avoiding food and drink.

• Lying, bad behaviour, and false actions reduce the value of fasting.

• True fasting includes good character and self-discipline

5. Virtues of Fasting

• Builds Sabr (patience) and self-restraint.

• Helps control desires and emotions.

• Strengthens faith during hardships and trials

6. Levels of Fasting (Imam Al-Ghazali)

• Minimum: Avoid food, drink, and sexual relations.

• Intermediate: Protect the tongue, eyes, ears, and hands from sin.

• Highest: Keep the heart focused on Allah and away from distractions

7. Rahmah (Mercy and Empathy)

• Fasting helps Muslims feel the pain of the poor and hungry.

• Encourages generosity and sharing food with others.

• Feeding someone who is fasting earns equal reward

DEFINITION OF ZAKAH

(Literally)

means to grow and to increase الزكاة

Refers to blessing, growth, cleanliness, and betterment

means “he is a man of goodness and righteousness الزاكي

possessing good character

DEFINITION OF ZAKAH

(Technically)

Zakah refers to the determined share of wealth prescribed by God to

be distributed among deserving categories

Act of compulsory ibadah which specifically involve the wealth of

Muslim.

This proves that ibadah in Islam is not just in spiritual dimension such

as Salah and Sawm, but it also covers social and material dimension

of human life .

In the Hadith of Jibril, zakāh is the third pillar of Islam,

after the declaration of faith (shahādah) and the

performance of prayer (ṣalāh)

This shows that zakāh is very important in a Muslim’s life,

just like prayer

Allah SWT mentions giving zakāh together with

performing prayer thirty-two times

CONCLUSION

Zakah contains spiritual and social dimensions

Muslims learn to rely on

Allah SWT.

They feel peace by giving

their wealth in obedience

to Him.

to material things.
