The Cotton Gin, invented by Eli Whitney, is a machine that quickly and efficiently separates cotton fibers from their seeds, revolutionizing the cotton industry. Just days later, President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth while attending a play at Ford's Theater in Washington D.C. These two events are the most impactful in Unit 5 because they marked a turning point in American history. The end of the Civil War signified the preservation of the Union and the abolition of slavery, which set the stage for reconstruction and the struggle for civil rights. Lincolns assassination sent America into political uncertainty and affected the direction of reconstruction policies.
