  • UK leaved EU at 31 January 2020-->first country to leave EU

  • on 24 January 2020 exit agreement was signed
  • since 1st January 2021 no member of EU-internal market and customs union anymore
  • Consequences...
  • ...for small companies: A quarter of six million companies were exporting to EU. Now they cannot do that because the customs duties are too high.
  • ...in the financial industry: Many bussinesmen have relocated their companies to Europe. So, British companies have to send more workers to their companies in EU. 
  • ...for consumers: There is an inflation in the UK. Food is becoming very expensive. For online packages from EU the people in the UK have to pay an extra fee of 20%.
  • ...for EU: The UK was the second largest net contributor in the EU. They had paid 350 million (actual sum 160 Mio.) pound every week for the EU.

    • no free roaming in European countries for travelers from the UK
    Rules for UK citizens in the EU
    • you may have to apply for a stay when you are living in a EU country as a UK citizen or when you want to live in a EU country
    • If you plan to move to the EU in 2021, you will no longer have an automatic right to live, work, study or retire there --> you will need a visa when you are moving there for another reason than tourism
    New UK immigration system
    • if you want to move to the UK to work there you have to pay for a visa (£ 348 for students, £ 610 - £ 1408 for skilled workers)
    Changes for Northern Ireland
    • Agreement between EU and UK for an invisible border between Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland(Remains in the EU)
    • lorries can continue to across the border without being inspected --> but food products like meat, fish and eggs has to be checked because of the EU standards 
    Trading between EU and UK
    • traders in England, Wales and Schottland have to customs declarations --> a lot of paperwork
    • plants, live animals and some foods will need special licences and certificates 
    • no automatic recognisition of professional qualifications
    • but the UK will be able to trade with countries like USA
