Drugs Are Too Expensive

Jerry, Clay and Dwoi

Drugs are usually expensive to brew due to the fact they are illegal and sometimes dangerous to grow. Without a decent job, it is quite hard to provide money in exchange for the drugs. Drugs are also usually very expensive due to the fact that they spend a lot of money researching the drug and testing it too, but the main reason is greed. For example, a certain drug could be extremely popular and due to the fact only 1 company owned the rights to produce it, it was very expensive. But as soon as the patent expired and other companies could make the drug, the sale price was dropped exponentially. Drugs such as tobacco are expensive due to taxation. Recreational drugs are really expensive because of the government.

Why some young people take drugs and others don’t

In order to deal with drug related issues we need to understand the reasons why some young people use drugs and others don’t. The factors which make some people more likely to use drugs are called ‘risk factors’. The factors which seem to protect others from the risk of drug use are called ’resilience factors’. No one can predict who will go on to use drugs. What we can do is look at the factors below – young people who have many risk factors and few resilience factors are more likely to use drugs.

Resilience factors

Environmental context Positive adult role models
Positive friends
Well off
Family factors No experience of loss or separation as a child
Strong family unit
Good relationship with parents
Parents supervise and monitor activities
Own lives
Feels negative about effects of drugs
Spiritual values
Personality High self-esteem
Thinks before acting
Laid back
Education Gets on well with teachers
Wants to do well at school
Parents expect a lot
Do well at school
Good formal support in education
http://www.drugs.ie/drugs_info/for_parents_carers/risks_resilience/
