People speak many languages: Dutch, English, Frisian, German, Spanish, Catalan, Welsh, Hungarian, Romanian, and Turkish. There are also lots of international students.

In Ynys Môn (Anglesey), the further south you go, the more Welsh is spoken. In some places, Hungarian and Romanian are common everywhere. Some areas aren't very diverse, mostly speaking Catalan and Spanish. In Friesland, Dutch and Frisian are spoken, but in the capital it's mostly Dutch and English due to international students. Outside the capital, Frisian is more common, though it varies by region.

Frisian is being pushed aside by Dutch and English, especially with many Dutch people moving to Friesland for cheaper land. This creates a kind of language hierarchy. For example, if the native language is written in smaller text on signs, it can seem less important.

Accents and vocabulary change depending on the region. There can be pressure not to speak your native language, and how much a language is used depends on the place.

I chose this picture of Falls Church, VA, near where I'm from. It shows a strip mall with shops displaying English, Spanish and Vietnamese. I like this picture because I am glad to be from this kind of a community. The fact that is an old strip mall shows how well-established these immigrant communities are in the area. I love to go to a Vietmanese restaurant and find Guatemalan chefs making the soup and Bolivian families eating it.
