I feel the American Dream is a Dream that you want to achieve using the opportunities of America. There are many opportunities in America that they might not have in other countries. In some countries if you are born into a poor family you will be stuck in poverty for the rest of your life. My American dream is to have a successful career so I can be financially stable and own a home and to be able to buy my parents things to give back to them as a thank you for them supporting me and helping me achieve my goals in life. I also want to have happiness, I want to have a career that I will enjoy and not be miserable in everyday.

Interview

During the interview with my dad he explains that owning his own home, being financially stable, and being his own boss is his idea of the American dream. He was influenced by his dad who he watched as a child, suffering to work two jobs just to pay his rent and to provide for his family. He believes that the United States is still the "land of opportunity" because there are many possibilities to achieve many different things. Many people will believe that the American dream is not realistic but my dad says “Yes, with hard work and education it can be achieved. Then it's up to the children to achieve it”, which to me means that you have to work for the American dream to be realistic, so therefore it is real. Right now my dad is living his American dream. He has a home, a business and being finacially stable which he always hoped for. Even though he succeeded in those things, he believes that there is always room for more accomplishments.

Poem: Mother to Son

I Believe that in this poem, the mother is telling her son that the America dream is real, and is motivating her son to not give up on achieving his goal. She explains her struggle and that even though she went through the worst, she kept on moving forward. "Well, son, I'll tell you: Life for me ain't been no crystal stair. It's had tacks in it, And splinters, And boards torn up, And places with no carpet on the floor-Bare." In this quote the mother is telling the son that life is not easy. She continues to motivate him by saying "So boy, don't you turn back. Don't you set down on the steps 'Cause you finds it's kinder hard. Don't you fall now –" meaning even though it may be tough, keep moving forward just like she did herself, and continues to do. This poem of a mother motivating her son to move forward to his American dream should be a motivation to all. It's proving to her son that the American dream is real.

This video clip explains how there are many different American Dreams out there other than to have a successful career and to own a house. For some, it is to graduate college, or getting the education that their parents never received. Now more recently people are saying that, just being able to be free to live their own lives as they choose, is living the American Dream. Even the simple thought of having a family can make someone feel successful. 8 out of 10 American's believe that they are living the dream or on the road to accomplishing it. I believe more people still believe that this is the reality.

"Neither Diana nor I could have known that seventeen years later, I would find myself sitting in Sandra Cisneros's dining room drinking champagne and eating carrot cake. That I would share a car ride with Julia Alvarez. That I would share the stage with Helena Maria Viramontes at a book reading. I couldn't have known what the future held for me. All I could do back then was to allow myself to dream."
It has shown that after all that she had been through, she was able to achieve her American dream. She reveals that she never thought that she would achieve it, but she did.

The American Dream is Alive and Well

This article explains the different meanings of how people see the American dream. Talking about the American dream used to be more about wealth, owning a home, or having a successful career. The topic of the American dream is however still alive and well but with a little different perspective. "Instead, 85 percent indicated that “to have freedom of choice in how to live” was essential to achieving the American dream. In addition, 83 percent indicated that “a good family life” was essential." In this quote it shows that just having the freedom of living the way you want to live is the actual American dream. Having a family, being able to get married and have kids, if by adoption or segregate. we have those choices, and that is what people now are calling the dream. "This pattern — seeing the American dream as more about community and individuality than material success and social mobility —", This is another example on how the dream has changed and what feels important. Now we care less about the material things, such a money, and houses and more about the ability to just be ourselves. So this shows that the America dream is still alive and well.
