Common Themes between both readings and the video:

Definition of Assessment: Ongoing actions taken to gather information regarding the learner and how they are progressing to the goal. Both the readings and the video suggested that assessment is a powerful and effective tool for both the teacher and the learner to ensure maximized learning potential. There were many principals that were similar between the readings including:
Assessments must be:
- fair and transparent
-Inclusive of everyone (accommodation/modification when needed)
-Related to the curriculum and learning goals
-communicated clearly to parents and students
-ongoing; to provide the opportunity for students to demonstrate their learning

I felt that the underlying theme was about slowing down the evaluation process with each student to take the time to analyze your assessments and adjust your teaching approach in order to fully maximize the students learning potential. With a more strategic approach to when, how and why you use assessments you are able to gain a better understanding of what the child may need, in order to lead them to independence and growth of their own ability to self-assess. There were 3 types of Assessment that were explained:

1. Assessment For Learning:
What- Baseline assessment of what the learner already knows in order to determine where and how to get to the learning goal.
How-Diagnostic; therefore the learner understands where they are and where they must be. Formative; ongoing assessment while learning is occurring in order to give feedback at the right time.
Why- Ongoing assessment allows the teacher to adjust their approach with each student specifically based on the previous assessments. Assessments and action items in relation to assessment should be meaningful and intentional.

2.Assessment As Learning:
What- Providing opportunities for children to develop and exhibit self-assessment skills. The goal is for the learner to develop an intrinsic motivation to self-assess, understand where they are and understand or seek to understand what they must do to achieve a goal set by themselves.
How- Formative;Ongoing process for learners to gain self-assessment skills and identify opportunities to use them.
Why- To provide real-time clear and concise feedback for the learner to use at their will. The intention is for them to become self-motivated learners with a continuous growth mindset.

3.Assessment Of Learning:
What- Final statement of the learning and progression of learning within a period of time.
How- Summative; Typically comes at the end of a term or year.
Why- To provide a final summary of the overall quality of learning. From this can come next steps to how the learner can continue to grow.

There is a dynamic between the Teacher/Learner/Peers interactions and how they effect each other. Teachers have the opportunityto create opportunities for the learner and peers to engage in inquiry and giving and receiving feedback by creating purposeful discussions and providing ongoing feedback to the children on where they were, where they are and what the learner needs to get there.
