The anomalies that separate the title characters from their communities vary both in kind and in motive. The Reverend Mr. Hooper assumes his veil quite deliberately, though whether he is motivated to do so because he feels guilt for suppressed sin, or because he intends to teach a lesson to an apparently self-righteous community, or for some other reason, we may never be certain. The hunger artist practices his strange art from inner compulsion or necessity. He can find no food he enjoys eating; that is, he can find nothing else he would prefer to do with his life. The winged old man is offered to us quite simply, and fantastically, as an old man who happens to have wings, though he, too, is set apart from the community by his eating habits, as he rejects everything from mothballs to papal lunches in favor of eggplant mush. Of the three characters, he is least in control of his anomaly and we know least of him from what the writer is willing to offer as his own perceptions. We know the kind of audience the hunger artist likes and the kind he detests, and at the end of the story we have his cryptic explanation for his commitment to fasting, but the winged old man speaks in an untranslatable language. Not surprisingly, "The Very Old May, with Enormous Wings" is a comedy, while the other two stories are tragic.

This superbly researched biography is nothing short of a tour de force. Martin (Andrew W. Mellon Professor Emeritus of Modern Languages, Univ. of Pittsburgh) has for decades been a pioneering scholar of Latin American literature in the English-speaking world (see his fourneys Through the Labyrinth: Latin American Fiction in the Twentieth Century). Based on detailed research as well as personal acquaintance with the subject, this is the most substantial English-language biography written of Garcia Márquez, winner of the 1982 Nobel prize in Literature and innovator of magical realism. Martin traces Garcia Márquez's life from his roots in a small Colombian town, to his worldwide travels, to his days of fame as an internationally acclaimed author. Garcia Márquez's politics, personal life, and literary motivations are considered in depth. Seventeen years in the making, this work not only details the life of a great writer but also provides considerable insight into life in Latin America. Including primary bibliographies of works published in Spanish and English and a secondary bibliography of critical and biographical works; highly recommended.

An angel, surely, cast out of heaven for plotting against the throne. Perhaps an emissary, bringing threat or warning from some alien world. The neighbors decide he’s a shipwrecked sailor, from Norway possibly, overlooking “the inconvenience of the wings.” A woman “who knew everything about life and death” pronounces him a demon come for the sick child. Maybe he is. Our narrator, chatty and noncommittal, never tells us. And the only descriptions of the creature, offered as the townspeople endlessly debate his origins and meaning, make him sound a lot like . . . a very old man.
